Canadian Woman’s Unexpected Love Story in Germany: Married and Expecting

In September 2022, Anna relocated to Göttingen, Germany, anticipating a brief academic experience. However, a chance encounter on the dating app Bumble led her to meet Leo, a local beekeeper and artist. Their connection was instantaneous, and just months later, they were engaged.

Anna, who originally planned to return to Canada at the end of her studies, faced a life-altering decision. “The decision to stay in Germany wasn’t that difficult to make,” she reflected. “I had met the love of my life.”

As their relationship deepened, Anna and Leo moved in together and celebrated their legal marriage in June 2023. Just this past October, they hosted a wedding celebration in France with family and friends, marking a significant milestone in their journey.

While Anna embraces the charm of rural German life, she candidly shares the challenges she faces, including a language barrier and cultural differences. “Society here is highly rule-abiding, which can get tiring,” she explains. Despite feeling isolated at times, Anna finds joy in the unique aspects of her new home, such as the mobile bakery that visits their village twice a week.

Looking ahead, the couple plans to remain in Germany for another two years, primarily for the healthcare benefits and Leo’s education. They are set to welcome their first child in January 2024. “Staying here will help us save some money in a more affordable setting,” Anna revealed.

As Anna navigates her life in Germany, she acknowledges the uncertainty of future plans. However, she remains optimistic and open to whatever lies ahead, stating, “My move to Germany has taught me that plans can change in the blink of an eye… My home is Leo, and whatever we do, we’ll do it together.”
