Braden Smith Breaks Big Ten Assists Record in Purdue’s 89-73 Win
BREAKING: Braden Smith has officially become the Big Ten’s career assists leader, achieving this milestone in a thrilling game as No. 5 Purdue defeated Wisconsin 89-73 on Saturday night. Smith delivered an impressive 12 assists, bringing his career total to 893 and surpassing the former record of 890 held by Cassius Winston from Michigan State.
The game took place at the Kohl Center in Madison, Wisconsin, where a large contingent of Purdue fans erupted into chants of “Braden Smith!” and gave him a standing ovation as he shattered the record. The senior guard not only excelled in playmaking but also contributed 14 points to his team’s commanding victory. Purdue is now on a five-game winning streak, averaging a remarkable margin of 26.6 points in those games.
Since suffering a loss to No. 3 Iowa State on December 8, where they fell 81-58, the Boilermakers (now 13-1, 3-0 Big Ten) have shown relentless determination. Alongside Smith, Fletcher Loyer led the scoring with 20 points, while teammates C.J. Cox contributed 14 points, Oscar Cluff scored 12 points, and Trey Kaufman-Renn added 11 points. Cluff also secured 11 rebounds.
Wisconsin (now 9-5, 1-2) saw a standout performance from Nick Boyd, who scored 24 points, while Nolan Winter contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds. Despite a strong start where Wisconsin led early, Purdue took control of the game with an Omer Mayer 3-pointer at the 7:25 mark of the first half and never looked back, extending their lead to as much as 25 points.
As the game progressed, Wisconsin made a late push, narrowing the gap to 84-73 with just over three minutes remaining. However, Loyer quickly extinguished any hopes of a comeback with a crucial 3-pointer. This loss marks Wisconsin’s first defeat at home this season, showcasing Purdue’s dominance in the conference.
This record-breaking night not only highlights Smith’s incredible talent and work ethic but also positions Purdue as a formidable contender in the Big Ten Conference. Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely as the Boilermakers continue their pursuit of excellence.
What’s Next: Purdue looks to maintain its momentum as they prepare for upcoming games, while Wisconsin will need to regroup quickly to bounce back from their first home loss.
