Blue Jays Manager Addresses Kiner-Falefa’s Heartbreaking Out at Home
UPDATE: In a critical moment that could have changed the fate of the Toronto Blue Jays, manager John Schneider defended Isiah Kiner-Falefa following a heartbreaking play that resulted in the team’s loss in Game 7 of the World Series. The incident, which saw Kiner-Falefa thrown out at home plate, has ignited a wave of discussions among fans and analysts alike.
During a press conference on December 12, 2023, at the winter meetings in Orlando, Florida, Schneider expressed his dismay at the criticism directed at Kiner-Falefa, stating, “I feel so bad for Izzy for getting all the blame.” He emphasized that while the team could have provided better guidance, the blame should not solely rest on Kiner-Falefa’s shoulders.
The dramatic final play unfolded in the bottom of the ninth inning, where a single from Bo Bichette and a subsequent walk loaded the bases for the Blue Jays. Kiner-Falefa entered as a pinch runner but was thrown out at home plate by Dodgers’ catcher Will Smith, just inches shy of scoring a potential championship-winning run.
“So could we have done a better job of getting Izzy another step or two down? Yeah, for sure,” added Schneider, highlighting the complex dynamics of the play. Kiner-Falefa’s lead of 7.8 feet was notably short, as per MLB Statcast data.
With the Dodgers’ infield playing in, Daulton Varsho hit a ground ball that was fielded by Miguel Rojas, who stumbled but managed to make the throw to Smith. Umpire Jordan Baker ruled Kiner-Falefa out after a review, concluding that Smith tagged the plate just before Kiner-Falefa reached it.
“I’ve seen that video 3,000 times, and in 1,500 of them it looks like Will’s off the plate,” Schneider remarked, reflecting on the contentious nature of the call.
This loss marks a significant moment for the Blue Jays, who were vying for their first championship since their back-to-back victories in the early 1990s. Schneider’s comments underscore the emotional weight carried by players and fans alike following the game.
As discussions about the game continue, Schneider noted that he has yet to fully analyze the footage of the crucial moments, stating, “It’s such a weird award,” referring to his runner-up status for AL Manager of the Year. He added humorously, “I haven’t done that yet and I don’t know when I will. It’ll probably involve a beer or two when the kids are asleep.”
The Blue Jays’ offseason plans will be closely monitored as they look to rebound from this heart-wrenching defeat. Fans are left eager for what comes next as the team assesses its roster and strategies for the upcoming season.
This incident has stirred strong emotions among the Blue Jays’ loyal fan base, prompting discussions on social media about Kiner-Falefa’s performance and the team’s future. The spotlight remains on the Blue Jays as they navigate the aftermath of a World Series that ended just an inch away from glory.
