Amazon Cuts 14,000 Jobs; Reports Indicate Possible 30,000 More
UPDATE: Amazon has announced an immediate reduction of 14,000 corporate jobs as part of significant organizational changes. This announcement, made on October 31, 2023, comes just a day after reports suggested the company may cut over 30,000 positions in total.
The job cuts are part of Amazon’s strategy to “operate like the world’s largest startup,” according to a memo sent to employees. The company aims to streamline operations by “reducing bureaucracy, removing layers, and shifting resources.” This restructuring is a direct response to over-hiring during the pandemic, with Amazon seeking to recalibrate its workforce.
Amazon’s CEO Andy Jassy previously indicated in a June memo that advancements in generative AI would lead to changes in job requirements. He stated, “We will need fewer people doing some of the jobs that are being done today,” highlighting a shift in focus towards efficiency through technology.
Affected employees will have 90 days to explore new roles within Amazon, with the company’s recruiting teams prioritizing internal candidates. For those who cannot find new positions or opt not to seek them, Amazon will provide transition support, including severance pay, outplacement services, and continued health benefits.
These cuts represent approximately 4% of Amazon’s reported 350,000-strong corporate workforce. The decision impacts major offices in the Bay Area, including Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, San Francisco, and East Palo Alto.
As the situation develops, Amazon’s future hiring plans remain uncertain, but the company has indicated it will continue to recruit in specific areas. The news has sparked significant concern among employees and industry observers regarding the company’s long-term strategy and job security.
