UPDATE: New Bedford police have arrested a 16-year-old Dartmouth teenager in connection with the fatal hit-and-run that claimed the life of Nicolasa Ventura Colaj, a mother of three, on January 1, 2024. Officials confirmed the teen faces charges of motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a crash resulting in death.

The tragedy unfolded shortly after midnight as Colaj, aged 33, was crossing an avenue in New Bedford after attending a late-night church gathering with family. She was struck by the vehicle, which police describe as a critical breakthrough in the investigation. Police later located and seized the vehicle involved in the incident, prompting swift action from law enforcement.

In a statement, New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody expressed condolences, stating, “While nothing can undo this tragic loss, we are committed to seeing this investigation through and ensuring Nicolasa’s family sees accountability and justice.” Colaj was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, having been thrown some distance by the impact.

Authorities have announced that the teenager is set to be arraigned in juvenile court in New Bedford on Monday, January 3, 2024. New Bedford Mayor Jon Mitchell commended the police for their “skillful and urgent investigative work,” hoping it will bring some comfort to Colaj’s grieving family and friends.

Colaj, originally from Guatemala, worked at a local fish house and was described by community advocates as a vital part of the immigrant workforce that sustains New Bedford’s fishing industry. This city is home to the most valuable fishing port in the United States, with one in five residents born abroad.

The hit-and-run incident highlights ongoing safety concerns, as a second pedestrian was tragically struck and killed in New Bedford just days prior. The victim, a 67-year-old man, was struck by a vehicle whose driver stopped to assist him. In response to these incidents, New Bedford police announced an increase in enforcement of speeding, red light violations, and other traffic infractions to enhance pedestrian safety.

This developing story continues to resonate within the community, underscoring the urgent need for road safety measures. As investigations progress, the focus remains on ensuring justice for Nicolasa Ventura Colaj and her family.
