Youri Tielemans Shines with Unmatched Passing Skills in Villa Win
Aston Villa’s midfielder Youri Tielemans showcased his exceptional passing abilities during the team’s impressive 3-1 victory over Nottingham Forest. His contributions were pivotal, with Tielemans not only providing a stunning assist for John McGinn’s second goal but also playing a crucial role in the build-up to the first goal scored by Ollie Watkins. The Belgian’s intelligence in finding teammates in tight spaces exemplifies his skill as a playmaker.
Tielemans’ journey has evolved significantly since making his Champions League debut at just 16 years old. After five years since former Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers described him as the “complete midfielder,” he now credits Villa’s head coach, Unai Emery, with enhancing his game. “I have improved since Leicester,” Tielemans told Sky Sports. “I am more mature now. Twelve years later, three kids later,” he added with a smile.
Under Emery’s guidance, Tielemans has refined his technical skills and defensive capabilities. “The manager has added things to my game with his tactics,” he said, highlighting the impact of long tactical sessions. “I feel like technically I have improved even though technical ability was always my strength.” His ability to maintain composure under pressure has proven vital, with Tielemans completing 1,102 passes under pressure last season, second only to Newcastle’s Bruno Guimaraes.
Mastering the Art of Passing
Tielemans attributes his success in passing under pressure to rigorous training methods at Villa. “We train on it so much, which makes it easier for me in the games,” he explained. The focus on smaller training areas with skilled teammates prepares him for the faster pace of matches. “If you can do it in smaller areas in training against good opponents, then in a game, it feels easier.”
His development in scanning the pitch for opportunities began in his youth at Anderlecht. “You start scanning at a young age because you have to know where the opponents come from,” he noted. This awareness allows him to execute passes that not only reach their target but also guide their next move. “With those passes, there is always a message in the pass,” he emphasized.
Tielemans acknowledges the balance needed between taking risks and playing conservatively. He ranks among the top midfielders for completed through-balls in the Premier League, but he also recognizes the inevitable mistakes that come with trying to break down defenses. “You do not have to force silly passes, which I have done,” he admitted. “Sometimes you are going to lose balls but it is about the next action and trying to help the team progress higher up the pitch.”
Adapting Roles on the Field
The versatility in Tielemans’ playing style allows him to adapt to various roles, often switching between a deeper midfield position and a more advanced attacking role during matches. This flexibility was evident in a recent game against Chelsea, where he started in a deeper role alongside Boubacar Kamara before moving forward as the game progressed. “Different roles, different responsibilities, but I quite like both of them,” he explained.
Despite the perception that a more advanced role offers greater freedom, Tielemans finds it challenging due to the dual demands of defending and attacking. “Defensively, it is also a lot more demanding because of the pressing,” he pointed out. His ability to manage these responsibilities has contributed significantly to Villa’s success this season.
After dealing with a setback due to injury earlier in the season, Tielemans feels reinvigorated and ready to contribute further. “I feel really good and want to keep that for the rest of the season,” he stated. With over 642 games played in his career, he aims to share his experiences with younger players at the club.
As the season progresses, Tielemans and his teammates are focused on pushing Aston Villa even higher in the league standings. “We want to have some positive results and carry on the form that we are in and finish the season in a high place,” he concluded. With Tielemans’ skill set and determination, the team’s aspirations appear well within reach.
