West Covina Clinches Victory Over Baldwin Park, Remains Undefeated
In a thrilling encounter on October 13, 2023, the West Covina Bulldogs secured a narrow victory against the Baldwin Park Braves, winning 28-20 in a Valle Vista League clash. The win allowed the Bulldogs to maintain their unbeaten status in league play, improving their record to 6-2 overall and 3-0 in the league.
The game took a decisive turn in the final minutes when West Covina scored a crucial touchdown with just 2:01 remaining. The Bulldogs executed an 80-yard drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run from Isaac Villescas, breaking a 20-20 tie. The team then successfully converted a two-point attempt, with Josiah Joseph pushing through the end zone following a strategic assist from quarterback Elias Irvin.
West Covina’s victory marks their fourth consecutive win, securing them a place in the CIF-Southern Section playoffs. They now share the top spot in the league standings with Northview, who also holds a 3-0 record. The two teams will face off in a decisive matchup in two weeks, with the league championship on the line.
“All the coaches agree,” said Bai Kabba, the Bulldogs’ first-year head coach. “We’re in a tough league, you can’t take anyone lightly and we’re playing great teams right now.”
The Braves struck first, capitalizing on a bad snap that set them up at the Bulldogs’ 14-yard line. Freshman Jacory Coleman dashed for a 5-yard touchdown, giving Baldwin Park a 7-0 lead at halftime.
However, the second half showcased the Bulldogs’ determination. Villescas connected with Mo Gogue on a half-back option for a touchdown, followed by a successful two-point conversion pass from Irvin, shifting the momentum in West Covina’s favor. Shortly after, Noah Davis added to the score with a 15-yard run, extending the Bulldogs’ lead to 20-7.
The Braves responded with resilience, narrowing the gap with a touchdown from Choyce Hampton and then tying the game with an impressive 86-yard halfback option from Elvis Diaz to Donovan St. Cyr with just over six minutes remaining.
Despite the Braves’ efforts, West Covina’s defense, led by standout players like Isaiah Rodrigues, who intercepted a pass at a crucial moment, ultimately secured the win. Rodrigues had previously demonstrated his skill by kicking a last-second field goal to defeat San Dimas in the previous week.
Coach Kabba praised his players, particularly highlighting the complementary styles of Villescas and Davis. “Isaac is a power runner but is deceivingly fast and Noah has really helped our running game,” he said.
The Bulldogs’ defense remained relentless throughout the match, with Josiah Joseph recording two sacks, showcasing their ability to pressure the Braves’ offense consistently.
As the season progresses, West Covina looks to continue their winning streak and solidify their position in the league as they prepare for their upcoming clash against Northview, a match that promises to be a high-stakes battle for the championship.
