Vanderbilt Women’s Basketball Triumphs Over Arkansas, 88-71
On January 1, 2024, the Vanderbilt Commodores began their Southeastern Conference (SEC) campaign with a decisive 88-71 victory over the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville. This win marks a strong start for the Commodores, who now hold a 1-0 record in conference play.
Blakes Shines with Record Performance
The standout performer for Vanderbilt was Mikayla Blakes, who tied her season-high by scoring 35 points. This impressive feat extends her streak of double-digit scoring games to 33 consecutive matches. Blakes demonstrated her versatility by shooting 50 percent from the field and contributing eight assists along with three steals.
Freshman Aubrey Galvan also had a significant impact, adding 14 points and six assists. Meanwhile, Sacha Washington dominated in the paint, recording a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Head coach Shea Ralph praised Blakes for her enthusiasm and skill, noting, “You can see her excitement to start this SEC season. Every game is a tough game, so I think there are lots of things we can clean up.”
Game Highlights and Tactical Insights
The game did not start in Vanderbilt’s favor, as Arkansas initially took an 11-5 lead. However, the Commodores quickly regrouped, executing a stunning 15-1 run that propelled them to a 28-17 lead early in the second quarter. By halftime, Vanderbilt had established a commanding 16-point advantage.
Throughout the game, Vanderbilt maintained control, finishing with a shooting percentage of 45.8 percent overall and 35 percent from three-point range. They also asserted dominance on the boards with a 37-31 rebounding advantage over Arkansas. Coach Ralph acknowledged the challenges faced in the second half, stating, “I thought we had some dips in the second half… but for the most part, I thought we had some really strong contributions.”
The Commodores’ victory came as a morale booster, reinforcing their capabilities as they advance further into their SEC schedule. Ralph expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance but emphasized the importance of learning from any mistakes as they prepare for upcoming matches. “I like learning when you win. I’m so proud of my team,” she added.
With this victory, the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team demonstrates their readiness to compete at a high level in the SEC, setting the tone for the remainder of the season.
