CARLSBAD – In a thrilling contest for the CIF State South Division 2-A regional championship, Rio Hondo Prep edged out Santa Fe Christian with a final score of 26-21 on December 7, 2025. This victory marks the Kares’ second consecutive regional title, showcasing their resilience against a formidable opponent.

Both teams entered the match undefeated, delivering an intense battle that captivated fans at Carlsbad High School. The game turned in the closing moments when Rio Hondo Prep recovered an onside kick, securing their lead and ultimately clinching the championship.

Santa Fe Christian quarterback Dax Labrum was a standout performer, throwing for 233 yards and two touchdowns. His final touchdown pass, a six-yard connection with Chase Woolley, narrowed the Kares’ lead to five points with just 57 seconds remaining. Despite this late surge, the Kares successfully batted the onside kick away, sealing their victory.

Following the match, Mark Carson, head coach of Rio Hondo Prep, expressed relief and gratitude for the hard-fought win. “Dogfight man, major props to Santa Fe Christian, their coaching staff, and their team,” he stated. “We came down to the San Diego area, and this was a battle. Two small schools in the 2-A regional championship, and man, the fans got their money’s worth.”

The Kares’ offense was dominated by running back Christian Lee, who rushed for 122 yards and scored all four of the team’s touchdowns. Nate Shine also made significant contributions, adding 117 rushing yards. Their performance was complemented by a strong offensive line, which played a crucial role in the team’s success.

As the game unfolded, both teams exhibited their strengths, leading to a tightly contested first half that ended in a 14-14 tie. Santa Fe Christian took an early lead with a one-yard touchdown run by Lincoln Mundis in the first quarter. However, Rio Hondo Prep responded with a series of powerful runs, culminating in a touchdown from Lee to tie the game.

A pivotal moment came in the fourth quarter when Labrum fumbled a snap at the Kares’ seven-yard line, resulting in a recovery by Elijah Gavia. “It felt incredible,” Gavia remarked about the play. “I saw the ball hit the ground, the QB kicked it, and I just shed my guy and dove for the ball.”

With the clock winding down, Rio Hondo Prep attempted to run out the remaining time. After punting with just over four minutes left, Santa Fe Christian had an opportunity to take the lead. However, the Kares’ defense stepped up, executing a fourth-down stop that allowed Lee to score again, extending their lead to 26-14 with just over two minutes remaining.

Although Santa Fe Christian responded with a quick touchdown, the Kares maintained their composure and thwarted the onside kick attempt, ensuring their victory. This victory is significant not only for the Kares but also as they prepare for the upcoming state championship against undefeated Sonora, who triumphed over Woodcreek Roseville with a score of 41-14 in the North Division title game.

Rio Hondo Prep aims to build on this momentum as they head into the state finals, seeking redemption after losing a close match in last year’s championship. Carson’s focus remains clear: “We won regional last year, but I know we’re still hungry for that state championship. I want to see if we can get that done.”
