Manchester United Parts Ways with Coach Ruben Amorim After 14 Months
Manchester United has announced the dismissal of coach Ruben Amorim, a decision confirmed on Monday morning. This move comes less than 24 hours after Amorim’s pointed remarks in a press conference, following a 1-1 draw with Leeds United, where he urged the club’s management to “do your jobs.”
The club’s leadership stated that the decision was based on a perceived lack of progress under Amorim’s management rather than any personal conflict, specifically with Jason Wilcox, the director of football. Sources within the club emphasized that they had not observed sufficient signs of evolution in the team’s performance. Nonetheless, the timing of the announcement suggests that Amorim’s candid comments, particularly directed at Wilcox, may have influenced the decision.
Amorim expressed his frustration regarding the inactivity in the January transfer window during a press conference prior to the Leeds match. Following the game, he escalated his criticism, stating his desire to be “manager, not the coach,” and calling on Wilcox to fulfill his responsibilities effectively.
According to reports from ESPN, club officials believed Amorim was “fully aligned” with their transfer strategy. They insisted that this change aims to provide the squad with the best chance of success as they aim for a higher position in the league.
The Portuguese coach took charge in November 2024, succeeding Erik ten Hag. During his tenure, which lasted 14 months, Amorim managed a total of 63 matches, securing 24 victories, including just 15 in the Premier League. Currently, Manchester United sits sixth in the Premier League standings, with eight wins from 20 matches this season.
Darren Fletcher, who is currently leading the Under-18s, is expected to take over as interim coach ahead of the team’s upcoming match against Burnley on Wednesday.
In an official statement released on Monday, Manchester United acknowledged Amorim’s contributions to the club, stating, “With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.” The statement expresses gratitude for Amorim’s efforts and wishes him well in his future endeavors.
The decision to part ways with Amorim underscores the high expectations surrounding Manchester United and the ongoing challenges the team faces in achieving its goals this season.
