Leo Chenal Shines as Versatile Force for Kansas City Chiefs
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – In a standout performance during the Kansas City Chiefs’ recent victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, linebacker Leo Chenal showcased his versatility and defensive prowess. On the very first play of the game, he successfully shed his blocker and tackled Ashton Jeanty, limiting the Raiders to a minimal gain. Throughout the opening series, Chenal demonstrated his ability to adapt by lining up as an edge rusher multiple times, pressuring quarterback Geno Smith to adjust his positioning in the pocket.
Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo praised Chenal’s contributions, stating, “Leo’s been terrific. I mean, he’s as valuable as anybody getting in there in key situations. We use him for a lot of different things.” This includes positioning him as a nose guard over the center and trusting him to cover agile targets. In a standout moment during Week 4, Chenal intercepted a pass from Lamar Jackson, a play that drew comparisons to legendary receiver Fred Biletnikoff for its impressive execution.
Chenal’s skill set extends beyond traditional linebacker duties. “He plays linebacker, then we put him at end. He’s got in there and played tackle,” Spagnuolo continued. “Eventually, we’ll probably have him out at corner or playing safety or something.” The potential for Chenal to contribute on offense is also notable; he was a prolific touchdown scorer during his high school career in Grantsburg, Wisconsin. Now, at 6-foot-3 and weighing 250 pounds, he plays a crucial role in assisting Spagnuolo and fellow linebacker Drue Tranquill in developing innovative defensive strategies.
Chenal’s unconventional approach is not limited to the defensive side of the ball. Special teams coordinator Dave Toub highlighted Chenal’s impact, recalling a pivotal blocked kick that secured a narrow 16-14 victory over the Denver Broncos last season. “Leo’s been a standout all year. I mean, he’s Mr. Consistent on special teams,” Toub noted, emphasizing Chenal’s crucial contributions across various facets of the game.
Middle linebacker Nick Bolton also acknowledged Chenal’s intelligence on the field. “Honestly, his best thing he’s probably done the last two years is communication, the IQ of the game, learning things around him, things that are happening,” Bolton remarked. He noted Chenal’s ability to alert teammates to key plays and reads, which has been invaluable for the linebacking corps.
As the Chiefs prepare for their upcoming games, Chenal’s evolving role continues to excite both coaches and fans. His ability to adapt and excel in multiple positions makes him a critical asset for Kansas City. With a blend of athleticism and football IQ, Chenal exemplifies the modern linebacker, ready to take on any challenge that comes his way.
