James Milner Ties Premier League Appearance Record at Villa Park
James Milner has equaled the all-time Premier League appearance record held by Gareth Barry, reaching a milestone of 653 appearances during a match against Aston Villa at Villa Park on Wednesday night. The veteran midfielder, playing for Brighton & Hove Albion, stepped onto the pitch after being substituted for the injured Carlos Baleba in the first half, marking a significant moment in his illustrious career.
Manager Fabian Hurzeler made the pivotal decision to include the 40-year-old Milner in the lineup, allowing him the opportunity to match Barry’s long-standing record. Milner has been primarily utilized as a late substitute in recent matches and had yet to start a league game in 2026 prior to this occasion.
Milner and Barry: A Shared History
The connection between Milner and Barry stretches back to their time together at Aston Villa and Manchester City. Of Barry’s total of 653 Premier League appearances, 129 were made alongside Milner as teammates. Their partnership began at Villa, where they played together in 62 matches from 2005 to 2009. Notable moments include two victories in the Second City derby against Birmingham City and a memorable 3-2 away win against Everton.
Their final appearance together at Villa came on the last day of the 2008-09 season, which saw Newcastle United relegated due to a crucial own goal by Damien Duff. Barry was instrumental in that match, despite the backdrop of a failed transfer to Liverpool, which overshadowed his performance.
Milner and Barry’s journey continued at Manchester City, where they shared the pitch in another 67 Premier League matches. Together, they celebrated winning the league title in the 2011-12 season and an FA Cup triumph during Milner’s debut season at the club. Cumulatively, they were teammates for a total of 171 matches across all competitions for both club and country.
Milner’s Rivalry with Barry
While Milner has enjoyed a long career in the Premier League, he faced Barry as an opponent on 12 occasions. Their first encounters occurred while Milner was at Leeds United and Barry was with Aston Villa. Notably, all of Milner’s early clashes came against future clubs of his, including Newcastle and Manchester City.
The last four matches they contested against each other were Merseyside derbies, with Milner representing Liverpool and Barry at Everton. Milner’s team emerged victorious in three of those matches, with a notable 3-1 victory at Anfield in 2017. Overall, Barry managed to defeat Milner in the Premier League on just three occasions, all while wearing a Villa shirt.
Milner’s Unique Teammate Experience
Throughout his extensive career, Milner has had the opportunity to play alongside a diverse range of teammates. The oldest player he shared the pitch with was David Batty, who was born in December 1968. They first played together during a match in 2003, with Milner being just a young player at Leeds United.
In contrast, Milner’s youngest teammate is Harry Howell, a 17-year-old attacking midfielder for Brighton. The two played together during two 6-0 victories in this season’s Carabao Cup. Furthermore, Milner’s youngest Premier League teammate is Tom Watson, born in 2006, who played six times in the Premier League before moving on loan to Millwall, aiming to replicate his success in the lower leagues.
Milner’s remarkable consistency and longevity in the Premier League have not only made him a fixture in the league but also a significant contributor to his teams, as evidenced by this latest milestone at Villa Park. His achievement of tying Gareth Barry’s record underscores the dedication and skill that has defined his career.
