Elias Mokwana, the talented winger for Bafana Bafana, has recently opened up about a challenging period in his career that nearly compromised his aspirations for international football. Following a surprising recall to the South African national team, Mokwana reflected on the difficulties he faced after his high-profile transfer to the Tunisian club, Esperance.

After joining Esperance, Mokwana’s transition was far from seamless. He encountered numerous obstacles that severely impacted his performance and confidence. “It wasn’t easy at first. As we all know, when I got to Esperance, things didn’t go as I expected,” Mokwana stated. His struggles were significant enough that they began to overshadow his future with Bafana Bafana. “I think I did lose some hope at some point,” he admitted, acknowledging the mental strain he experienced during this tumultuous time.

Loan Move Sparks Revival

The turning point in Mokwana’s career came with his loan move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Hazem. This change proved to be crucial, as he formed a vital partnership with coach Jalel Kadri. Mokwana credited Kadri’s support and personalized coaching as instrumental in his revival. “With my coach, I think I had hope. He gave me hope. He was working with me with extra sessions, and he always believed in me, and he told me that I’ll get back into the team,” Mokwana expressed.

Under Kadri’s guidance, Mokwana began to regain his form. His renewed confidence was evident on the field. “When I made the move to Al-Hazem, I think I started to enjoy myself a little bit better, training well, and the coach was also encouraging me each and every day,” he explained. This resurgence in his performance did not go unnoticed.

Mokwana’s consistent displays in Saudi Arabia ultimately attracted the attention of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos. His impressive return to form paved the way for his selection in the national squad for the upcoming AFCON tournament. The journey from doubt to redemption highlights Mokwana’s resilience and determination, supported by pivotal mentorship.

As he prepares to represent South Africa on the international stage, Mokwana’s story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the impact of strong leadership. His experience reflects the complexities of professional sports, where mental strength plays as crucial a role as physical ability.
