Denver Broncos Sign Veteran Marcedes Lewis to Practice Squad
The Denver Broncos have signed veteran tight end Marcedes Lewis to their practice squad following a series of injuries at the position. The announcement came on Wednesday, shortly after Lewis completed a workout with the team on Tuesday. At 41 years old, Lewis enters his 20th season in the NFL, adding significant experience to a Broncos squad facing a tight end shortage.
Lewis, who was selected as the 28th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars, now finds himself with the Broncos as they navigate challenges within their roster. The team has been dealing with injuries, particularly to tight ends. Lucas Krull is on injured reserve after fracturing a bone in his foot earlier this season, and Nate Adkins left last Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys with a knee injury.
Given the situation, Lewis is likely to be considered for a gameday elevation from the practice squad for the upcoming match against the Houston Texans on March 10, 2024. His reputation as one of the best blocking tight ends in the league makes him a valuable asset, especially as the Broncos seek to bolster their offensive capabilities.
The Broncos currently have only two healthy tight ends on their active roster: Evan Engram and Adam Trautman. Additionally, the practice squad includes Patrick Murtagh, an international pathway player from Australia, and Caleb Lohner, a seventh-round draft pick who transitioned from basketball to football.
Lewis played for the Chicago Bears last season, participating in 17 games and starting four. He recorded one reception and contributed to 19 percent of the Bears’ offensive snaps, along with 52 snaps on special teams. His extensive experience and skills will be crucial as the Broncos look to maintain their competitive edge in the ongoing season.
Head coach Sean Payton is no stranger to navigating roster challenges. He was in his first year as head coach of the New Orleans Saints during Lewis’ rookie season in 2006. The signing of Lewis reflects the Broncos’ commitment to addressing immediate needs while leveraging the experience of a seasoned player.
As the Broncos prepare for their next game, the addition of Lewis could play a pivotal role in enhancing their offensive strategy and providing support to a team eager to improve its standings.
