Conte and Spalletti to Face Off for the First Time in Serie A
Antonio Conte and Luciano Spalletti are set to meet for the first time as head coaches when Juventus visits Napoli at the Stadio Maradona on December 2, 2025. This highly anticipated Serie A match carries significant weight for both teams, as Napoli aims to reclaim the top spot in the league, while Juventus seeks to secure crucial points in the early race for the Champions League.
In preparation for the match, both sides are dealing with injury challenges. Napoli will be without four key midfielders: Kevin De Bruyne, Stanislav Lobotka, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa, and Billy Gilmour. Juventus faces its own difficulties, missing striker Dusan Vlahovic and several defenders, including Federico Gatti, Bremer, and Daniele Rugani.
How Conte and Spalletti Avoided Each Other
The meeting between Conte and Spalletti is notable not just for its timing but also for its rarity. Surprisingly, this will be the first encounter between the two esteemed coaches in their careers. Their paths have diverged significantly since Conte began his coaching career in Serie B with Arezzo and Bari from 2006 to 2009, while Spalletti was managing AS Roma in Serie A.
Spalletti’s five-year tenure at Zenit St. Petersburg from 2009 to 2014 further separated their paths, as he did not compete against Conte during his time managing clubs like Atalanta, Siena, or Juventus. Following this, Conte took charge of the Italy national team from 2014 to 2016, which coincided with Spalletti’s second stint at Roma during the 2016-2017 season.
After his time with Roma, Spalletti became the head coach of Inter Milan from 2017 to 2019, where he was eventually succeeded by Conte, who led the team until 2021. Subsequently, Conte took over at Tottenham Hotspur from 2021 until 2023, while Spalletti transitioned to Napoli in the same period. His appointment as head coach of the Italy national team in the summer of 2023 meant that the two coaches did not meet at the club level for the past two seasons.
A Historic Clash in the Title Race
As the 2025-26 Serie A season unfolds, their first meeting holds significant implications not only for their personal rivalry but also for the broader context of the league. Both Napoli and Juventus are vying for crucial points in the title race and Champions League positions. The outcome of this match could alter the trajectory for both teams as they push for success in the domestic league.
The clash at the Stadio Maradona is set to captivate fans and mark a historic moment for both coaches, who have navigated a complex landscape of club and international football without crossing paths until now. As they prepare for this high-stakes encounter, the anticipation builds for what promises to be an electrifying Serie A showdown.
