Colts Owner Issues Ultimatum to Coach and GM for 2026 Season
The owner of the Indianapolis Colts, Carlie Irsay-Gordon, has issued a strong warning to head coach Shane Steichen and general manager Chris Ballard regarding the upcoming 2026 season. Irsay-Gordon stated that a failure to secure a playoff spot will not be tolerated, following a disappointing end to the 2025 season where the team finished with a record of 8-9.
After a promising start, winning seven of their first eight games, the Colts faltered in the latter half of the season. Injuries significantly affected their performance, notably with starting quarterback Daniel Jones suffering a torn Achilles tendon in December. Backup quarterback Anthony Richardson also faced a peculiar eye injury, prompting the team to bring former quarterback Philip Rivers out of retirement. Ultimately, rookie Riley Leonard took the helm for the season finale against the Houston Texans.
Irsay-Gordon, who took ownership of the franchise in May 2025 following the death of her father, Jim Irsay, expressed confidence in Steichen and Ballard but made it clear that the stakes have never been higher. Speaking to reporters after the Colts’ defeat to the Texans, she emphasized the urgent need for results.
Call for Improvement Amidst Adversity
“We have been very clear with Chris and Shane that giving them another opportunity means the sense of urgency for them to deliver and perform has never been higher,” Irsay-Gordon stated. She insisted that the team’s performance must improve, particularly in handling adversity. “We’ve got to be able to handle adversity better and still find a way to win, because injuries are never an excuse. Not in this league,” she added.
The Colts’ struggles this season marked the fifth consecutive year they failed to reach the playoffs, with three of those seasons occurring under Steichen’s leadership. Despite the setbacks, Irsay-Gordon reiterated her belief that both Steichen and Ballard are capable of leading the team back to success.
“Chris and Shane are both capable of facing this challenge head-on and finding a way to achieve the results that our fans deserve, which is winning games, getting to the postseason, and ultimately winning championships,” she said.
Looking ahead, Irsay-Gordon indicated that the organization would thoroughly evaluate the entire season’s performance. “We’re going to have to look at how things go through the whole season,” she said. “But we really believe this decision to bring back Ballard and Steichen for 2026 is based on the potential we saw in the first half of our season, and we expect that to continue throughout next year.”
As the Colts prepare for the 2026 season, both the coaching staff and management will be under increased scrutiny to deliver results that align with the expectations of Irsay-Gordon and the dedicated Colts fanbase.
