Central-Phenix City and Moody Claim State Titles in Flag Football Showdown
The results of the AL.com Flag Football Poll for 2025 reflect significant changes following the state playoff finals. The top two teams in each class, Central-Phenix City and Moody, emerged victorious at the Super 7 Championships held last week at Progressive Field in Birmingham.
In the Class 6A/7A championship, the No. 1 ranked Central-Phenix City maintained its dominance with a decisive victory over No. 2 Vestavia Hills, winning 46-7. This triumph marks Central’s third consecutive state title, capping off an impressive unbeaten season with a record of 20-0. The team concluded its championship run on a remarkable 57-game winning streak, overcoming Vestavia Hills, which had previously enjoyed a 27-game unbeaten streak of its own.
Moody also celebrated a historic win, defeating No. 2 Montgomery Catholic 27-18 to secure its first state championship in the 1A/5A class. This victory avenged a loss the Blue Devils faced in the 2024 state championship game. Moody finished the season with a record of 22-3, while Montgomery Catholic concluded its campaign at 21-5.
Rankings and Notable Performances
Central-Phenix City’s success propelled them to the second position in the latest MaxPreps national rankings. They were also placed third in the USA Today Top 25, which has yet to release its final poll. Vestavia Hills, despite the loss, finished the year with a commendable record of 28-2, earning the 27th spot in MaxPreps and sixth in the USA Today ranking.
Moody’s victory elevated them to 21st in both the MaxPreps and USA Today rankings, while Montgomery Catholic was ranked 23rd by USA Today. The large-school Top 10 saw significant shifts, including Smiths Station, which was unranked in the final regular-season poll, rising to No. 3 after its semifinal performance. Homewood, which faced defeat against Vestavia Hills in the quarterfinals, secured the 10th position in the final poll. Notably, seven of the final Top 10 teams reached at least the quarterfinals of the playoffs.
In the small-school Top 10, there was notable movement following the top two teams’ performances, although no new teams entered the rankings. Seven quarterfinalists maintained their positions within the small-school Top 10, showing the competitive spirit throughout the season.
The excitement from the state playoffs continues to resonate in the local community, particularly with the Vestavia Hills parks department hosting a flag football clinic and high school showcase, aimed at fostering young talent in the sport.
As the dust settles on the current season, the AL.com Flag Football Poll reflects a dynamic landscape, capturing the thrill and intensity of high school flag football. With champions crowned and rankings reshuffled, anticipation builds for what promises to be another exhilarating season ahead.
