The Cleveland Cavaliers will aim to bounce back from a heavy defeat against the Boston Celtics as they host the short-handed Philadelphia 76ers on March 18, 2024. The Cavaliers, who had their seven-game home winning streak snapped, fell to the Celtics with a score of 118-94. Cleveland struggled significantly, particularly in the first half, where they missed 20 of their 22 three-point attempts, finishing the game with a shooting percentage of only 28.9%.

Despite the team’s overall poor performance, All-Star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell managed to score 30 points. He was supported by James Harden, who contributed 19 points along with 10 assists. However, the Cavaliers fell behind by 26 points during the third quarter, making it difficult for them to recover. “Against a team like that, it’s really make or miss,” Mitchell said, reflecting on the team’s shooting woes. He noted that the first half was “one of the worst halves of shooting we’ve had all season.”

Cleveland coach Kenny Atkinson acknowledged the team’s struggle, stating, “Boston just made better decisions than we did. We love 3s, but sometimes we’re a little overzealous with them.” Mitchell’s performance was particularly impressive given that he had just returned from a four-game absence due to a right groin strain. He finished the game with a shooting line of 9 of 18 from the field, including 3 of 9 from beyond the arc, while also going 9 of 11 from the free-throw line.

The Cavaliers currently remain in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. However, they are likely to be without center Jarrett Allen for a second consecutive game due to a right knee injury. This absence could further challenge Cleveland’s efforts against a depleted Philadelphia squad.

The 76ers, who recently experienced a setback themselves, lost standout point guard Tyrese Maxey to a sprained right finger during their game against the Atlanta Hawks on March 16, 2024. Maxey suffered the injury after colliding with teammate Adem Bona with just 16.2 seconds left in the match. Following the game, the 76ers officially listed Maxey as out for the next two games while he undergoes further medical evaluations. Coach Nick Nurse acknowledged the severity of the situation, stating, “Obviously, it’s huge, right, with everything we’ve got going on with other guys out.”

In addition to Maxey’s absence, the 76ers will also be without center Joel Embiid, who is sidelined due to a right oblique strain. Guard VJ Edgecombe is considered questionable for Monday’s match with a bruised lumbar, while guard Paul George is serving a suspension for a violation of the league’s drug policy.

The 76ers arrived in Cleveland after their loss to the Hawks, affording them a day to rest. Despite their recent struggles, the team remains focused on the remaining games of the season. Following their defeat, Philadelphia dropped out of the top six playoff positions and now sits in eighth place, having been surpassed by the Orlando Magic and Miami Heat. “The standings are what they are,” Nurse remarked. “Everybody below us is kind of hot, but there are plenty of games left to play.”

As the Cavaliers prepare to face the undermanned 76ers, all eyes will be on how they respond to their recent loss and whether Mitchell can lead his team to a much-needed victory.
