Catawba Falls Short Against Columbus State in Southeast Regional
Catawba College’s men’s basketball team concluded its season on March 2, 2024, suffering a narrow defeat to Columbus State University in the Southeast Regional quarterfinal held at the Abney Athletic Center in Anderson, South Carolina. Despite a strong overall performance, the Indians struggled significantly from beyond the arc, ultimately losing 78-75.
The Indians exhibited solid shooting, finishing with a field goal percentage of 51.6%. They also performed well on the boards and committed only eight turnovers. However, their inability to convert three-point attempts proved costly, as they shot just 3-for-22 from long distance. Jordan Simpson, who typically excels in this area, had a challenging game, managing only 1-for-10 from three-point territory.
Catawba entered the contest with optimism, leading by nine points at halftime. The team’s peak performance came when Justin Banks executed a dunk that extended their lead to 12 points with 13:23 remaining in the second half. However, Columbus State rallied, tying the game at 71-all with just under three minutes left.
Columbus State, which finished the game with a shooting percentage of 47% and successfully made seven three-pointers, showcased resilience in the closing minutes. Marlon Smith was the standout player for Columbus State, scoring an impressive 29 points and sinking four three-pointers.
Despite the setback, Catawba’s Ibra Athie delivered an exceptional performance, scoring 28 points on 13-for-17 shooting. Chase Daniel and Justin Banks contributed with 14 and 12 points, respectively. The team’s efforts were commendable, yet their inability to maintain their lead in the final minutes ultimately decided the outcome.
As the season comes to a close, Catawba’s players and coaching staff have much to reflect on, particularly the lessons learned from this hard-fought regional playoff.
