Trump’s “Donroe Doctrine” Comment Stuns Political Experts
Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding U.S. foreign policy have raised eyebrows among political analysts and observers. During a discussion on September 30, 2023, about his administration’s operation to capture the leader of Venezuela, Trump referred to the *Monroe Doctrine* in a way that left many questioning the reality of his statement. He said, “All the way back it dated to the Monroe Doctrine. And the Monroe Doctrine is a big deal. But we’ve superseded it by a lot. By a real lot… They now call it the Donroe Document.”
The term “Donroe Doctrine,” although likely a slip of the tongue, drew immediate attention and criticism. Democratic Congresswoman Madeleine Dean remarked on the implications of Trump’s words. She stated, “The only reason anybody would talk about the Monroe Doctrine and in some vain moment, call it the Donroe Doctrine, is if you are in an expansionist war.” Dean emphasized that Trump’s comments reveal an alarming mindset regarding foreign policy.
Reactions on social media reflected a mix of disbelief and humor. Chuck Todd, host of the *Chuck ToddCast*, quipped, “Who needs The Onion? Hey kids, let’s talk about the ‘Donroe Doctrine.'” Similarly, Democratic strategist Michelle Kinney expressed her astonishment, saying, “Oh my god how is this real.”
Political commentator John Cassidy from *The New Yorker* shared a meme that captured the absurdity of the remark, while Professor Christopher Rhodes, an academic who writes about the Monroe Doctrine and Manifest Destiny, added, “But now he’s not only invoking the Monroe Doctrine but making a literal mockery of it. Disturbing times.”
The Monroe Doctrine, established in the early 19th century, asserted that European nations should not interfere in the affairs of the Americas. Trump’s comments suggest a significant reinterpretation or dismissal of this key principle. Diplomat Tom Malinowski pointed out that similar doctrines are referenced in global contexts, noting, “It’s called the Putin doctrine in Europe and the Xi Jinping doctrine in Asia.”
Former Republican strategist Jeff Timmer also weighed in, characterizing Trump’s comments as indicative of a lack of understanding. He stated, “The Donroe Doctrine = Trump is the stupidest motherf—— oaf in this, or any hemisphere.”
The fallout from Trump’s remarks underscores ongoing tensions in U.S. foreign policy and the perception of the current administration’s grasp on historical doctrines that have shaped international relations. As discussions evolve, the implications of such comments may continue to resonate in both political and diplomatic circles.
