Trump Optimistic After Phone Call with Putin; Meeting Set in Budapest
President Donald Trump expressed optimism following a recent phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during which the two leaders agreed to meet in person next week. The call, described as “very productive” by Trump on his social media platform, Truth Social, is part of ongoing efforts to find a resolution to the conflict in Ukraine.
In a post on Thursday, Trump announced that he will meet with Putin in Budapest, Hungary, for the second time. This upcoming meeting aims to address the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, which has persisted since 2022. According to NBC News, Trump will also hold discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday, where the focus will be on his conversation with Putin and other relevant topics.
Trump noted that he and Putin have arranged for a gathering of their respective high-level advisors next week, although the specific location for this meeting has yet to be confirmed. The U.S. delegation will include Secretary of State Marco Rubio. In his social media update, Trump emphasized the importance of this diplomatic engagement, stating, “President Putin and I will then meet in an agreed upon location, Budapest, Hungary, to see if we can bring this ‘inglorious’ War, between Russia and Ukraine, to an end.”
During the call, Trump expressed belief that substantial progress was made. He also highlighted that Putin acknowledged the United States’ efforts in achieving peace in the Middle East. Trump quoted Putin as congratulating him on this accomplishment, which he described as a “Great Accomplishment of Peace,” one that has been “dreamed of for centuries.”
The previous meeting between Trump and Putin took place in August 2023 in Alaska, which aimed to address the Ukraine conflict but did not lead to a peace agreement. Trump is hopeful that the success in Middle Eastern negotiations may positively influence discussions regarding the war in Ukraine.
As both leaders prepare for their upcoming meeting, the international community watches closely, anticipating potential developments that may arise from this renewed dialogue. The outcome of their discussions could have significant implications for the geopolitical landscape in Eastern Europe and beyond.
