Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis Workers Achieve Union Victory After Strike
Workers at Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis have successfully unionized, aligning with Teamsters Local 135 after an extensive strike that highlighted their determination for fair labor conditions. This decisive victory comes after several weeks of tension and delays, notably influenced by the recent government shutdown in the United States.
The unionization efforts began when approximately 200 casino workers were set to vote on joining the Teamsters on October 17. This vote, however, faced significant postponements due to a record 43-day government shutdown that affected various labor processes. Tensions escalated when Caesars Entertainment, the casino’s operator, opposed the involvement of a third-party auditor to oversee the union vote, prompting workers to initiate a strike.
The strike, which lasted several weeks, aimed to pressure Caesars into recognizing their efforts to unionize. In response to the workers’ actions, the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) intervened to conduct the vote. Ultimately, a majority of the workers expressed their desire to join the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, marking a significant step towards improving their working conditions.
Teamsters Local 135 represents around 12,000 employees across various sectors, including casino, construction, and airline industries. The union is now committed to advocating for better wages, tip pooling, and enhanced job security for its new members at Horseshoe Casino.
Workers expressed relief and joy at the outcome. Dakota Massman, a table games dealer at the casino, articulated the sentiment, stating that the strike served as a powerful reminder of the influence workers can wield when united. Massman criticized Caesars for their resistance to unionization but celebrated the workers’ triumph over the casino management.
In a statement reflecting on the situation, Dustin Roach, president of Teamsters Local 135, criticized the handling of the unionization process by Caesars Entertainment. He commended the workers’ spirit and pledged to bring that same determination to negotiations for their first contract.
Tommy Blitsch, director of the Teamsters Convention, Trade Show, and Casino Division, praised the perseverance of the Horseshoe Casino employees. He remarked, “Our union made it clear to Horseshoe from the start that there was only one way this strike was ending, and that’s with Teamsters representation.”
The successful unionization at Horseshoe Casino Indianapolis highlights a growing trend among workers advocating for their rights and better working conditions, setting a notable example for labor movements across the country.
