Arizona Secures $446 Million for Broadband Expansion to Boost Connectivity
Arizona is poised to significantly improve its broadband infrastructure following the approval of its final Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) proposal by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). This initiative, spearheaded by Senators Ruben Gallego and Mark Kelly, aims to expand high-speed internet access to more than 70% of the state, encompassing both rural and Tribal areas. The project targets 118,170 locations with an estimated deployment cost of $446,123,359.
Senator Gallego, in a press release from his office, emphasized that the approval of the BEAD program represents a crucial step towards achieving widespread digital connectivity in Arizona. He raised concerns about recent changes made by the current administration that could hinder progress. According to Gallego, these modifications might restrict the full allocation of funds intended for Arizona, particularly affecting Tribal communities such as the Hopi Tribe, White Mountain Apache Tribe, and Yavapai-Apache Nation. He is actively advocating for a reversal of these changes to ensure that “every community can get connected.”
Senator Kelly echoed Gallego’s sentiments, affirming that access to reliable, high-speed internet should be a right for every Arizonan, regardless of their location. He stated, “This final approval means many communities are one step closer to getting connected,” emphasizing the need for the full extent of Arizona’s broadband funding to be utilized as intended by Congress.
State Leadership Welcomes Investment
Arizona’s Governor Katie Hobbs has expressed her support for this significant investment, underscoring the crucial role of broadband infrastructure in unlocking economic opportunities statewide. “Opportunity for every Arizonan means access to fast, affordable, reliable internet, no matter your zip code,” she remarked during the announcement. Governor Hobbs highlighted the importance of expanded broadband access in various sectors, including education, healthcare, and workforce development.
The federal funds allocated for this initiative are part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, a project that Senator Gallego played a significant role in shaping. With the NTIA’s recent program guidance satisfied, Arizona will utilize its portion of the $993,112,231 allocated for BEAD funding to make substantial progress in bridging the digital divide. The State Broadband Office now has the authority to begin procurement and installation of essential fiber technology in underserved and unserved areas across the state.
This investment not only aims to enhance connectivity but also seeks to create an equitable digital landscape for all Arizonans. The anticipated rollout of high-speed internet is expected to have far-reaching implications for local economies and communities. As the state moves forward with this initiative, the focus remains on ensuring that every resident benefits from the promised digital equity.
