Urban Farm Turns Christmas Trees into Feast for Goats
As holiday decorations come down, the Urban Growers Collective in Chicago is continuing its festive tradition of recycling Christmas trees by feeding them to goats. Located on the South Side, this seven-acre urban farm eagerly welcomes discarded trees to nourish its Nigerian Pygmy goats, who relish the opportunity for a unique post-holiday feast.
Keani Staton, community and volunteer coordinator at Urban Growers Collective, described the goats as having an insatiable appetite. “These girls have the hugest appetite you will ever see. They never stop being hungry,” she said. The goats typically consume hay, but during this season, the discarded Christmas trees become their primary meal. Staton noted that for the goats, these trees are like a festive dinner, available only after the holiday season.
For the past three years, the farm has invited the community to donate their used Christmas trees, ensuring they are free of ornaments, tinsel, or any other decorations. Staton explained, “When things are really hard and able to give them some more texture, that’s when they’re attacking the tree.” She has witnessed the goats demolish a tree in as little as ten minutes, highlighting their enthusiasm for the seasonal treat.
Each year, dozens of trees are consumed, leaving no trace behind except for a few remnants that are repurposed for composting and wood chipping. “So, it’s a win-win all around for everybody,” Staton remarked, emphasizing the environmental benefits of this initiative.
The Urban Growers Collective will continue to accept recycled Christmas trees on January 6 and January 10, 2024. During the drop-off events, visitors can meet the goats, adding a festive touch to the recycling process. The farm’s innovative approach not only supports local wildlife but also fosters community engagement in sustainable practices.
As the holiday season wraps up, the goats at Urban Growers Collective continue to enjoy their special treats, bringing a unique joy to the community while promoting environmentally friendly solutions for post-holiday waste.
