Teenagers Champion New Community Center in Los Gatos
A recent report by the Los Gatos Thrives Foundation highlights the strong desire among teenagers for a new multigenerational community center in Los Gatos, California. In 2024, the foundation’s Community Needs Report identified dedicated space for teens as a top priority. Since the closure of The Venue in 2012, which was a center exclusively for teenagers, there has been a notable absence of a gathering place for local youth.
To advocate for the new center, a student-led club at Los Gatos High School has emerged. This group aims to engage peers, gather input, and assist with the foundation’s surveys and workshops. The report indicates that teenagers envision a space that is easily accessible by walking or biking, includes facilities for physical activities and food services, and fosters regular interactions between older adults and teens.
The research gathered insights from various sources, including a focus group of students from Los Gatos High School, a survey of 281 students, and a workshop with parents from the high school. Additionally, input from a focus group at Fisher Middle School and observations of nearby teen facilities contributed to the findings.
Students expressed concerns about the limited availability of affordable activities in town that do not require transportation. They emphasized a need for spaces where they can simply “exist” and voiced feelings of being overlooked by local authorities. Their recommendations to the foundation included establishing a game room open to all ages, with designated hours for teens; adding a teenage representative to the planning committee for the new community center; creating a program that offers service hours for teens who engage with older adults; and ensuring that teen interests are prioritized in the center’s amenities.
Local Artisan Event at the Butter Paddle
In a separate initiative, the Butter Paddle gift store is set to host an event featuring local potter Anita Clemetson as part of its new “Inside the Studio” series. Scheduled for February 28, from 13:00 to 16:00, the event aims to showcase artisans whose work is available at the store.
Clemetson, who has over 40 years of experience, creates functional clay art designed for everyday use. She expressed her philosophy, saying, “I want my pottery to be used, not tucked away. There’s something special about creating pieces that become part of someone’s everyday life.” Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Clemetson, observe live demonstrations, and explore her latest designs, along with pieces not usually available for purchase. Light refreshments will also be served.
The Butter Paddle is operated by over 70 members of the EMQ Auxiliary, and profits from sales support Pacific Clinics, an organization providing behavioral and mental health services to children and families in need throughout Santa Clara County. The store features a curated selection of goods, including home decor, jewelry, baby items, and gourmet foods from local and women-owned businesses.
These initiatives demonstrate a growing commitment within the Los Gatos community to create inclusive spaces that cater to various age groups, fostering connections and support among residents.
