Sabrina Carpenter Revives 2003 Ralph Lauren Gown at Variety Event
Sabrina Carpenter made a striking appearance at Variety’s Hitmakers event in Los Angeles on December 1, 2023. The pop star showcased a vintage gown from Ralph Lauren’s spring 2003 collection, offering a refreshing departure from her usual stage attire. After recently concluding her Short N’ Sweet tour, Carpenter stepped onto the red carpet in a gown that seemed to transport viewers back to a more romantic era.
The gown, a patchwork design featuring gingham, plaid, and sun-faded florals, was originally showcased at New York Fashion Week in 2003. Shortly thereafter, it gained prominence when actress Penélope Cruz donned the same piece at a Beverly Hills charity event, marking its entry into red carpet history. Carpenter’s choice to wear this dress highlights her appreciation for vintage fashion and its enduring appeal.
In a departure from her typical glamorous look, Carpenter opted for a more understated appearance. Known for her vibrant stage makeup and glossy curls, she chose a nearly bare-faced look complemented by tousled waves and warm, natural skin tones. A light blush on her cheeks added to the softly romantic feel of the ensemble, contrasting sharply with the sequined and theatrical costumes that characterized her recent performances.
Carpenter has developed a reputation for her vintage style, often collaborating with stylist Jared Ellner to uncover rare pieces from different fashion eras. Their partnership has led to a series of memorable fashion moments, ranging from jewel-toned designs by Bob Mackie to more contemporary pieces. For instance, at the 2023 VMAs, Carpenter made headlines by wearing three distinct Mackie designs from the 1970s, showcasing her flair for theatricality.
This vintage-inspired moment at the Variety event is not the only instance of Carpenter’s archival fashion choices this year. In her recent cover story for Rolling Stone, released on November 30, 2023, Carpenter paid homage to the Victoria’s Secret runway archive. She modeled iconic pieces from the brand’s 1999 and 2010 fashion shows, including a dreamy sky blue gingham lingerie set and an off-the-shoulder lace top paired with a sheer maxi skirt.
Ellner discussed their approach to vintage fashion in an interview with PAPER in December 2023, emphasizing the importance of selecting garments that fit the occasion. “I adore pulling archival fashion, but I do my best to use it when it’s truly the perfect garment for the client and event,” he stated. This thoughtful curation is evident in Carpenter’s fashion choices, which resonate with both nostalgia and modern sensibilities.
Carpenter’s talent for reviving forgotten runway pieces has made her a compelling figure in the pop culture landscape. Last year, she recreated a look originally worn by Naomi Campbell for the cover of TIME. The iconic 1997 red bodysuit, paired with knee-high socks, was updated with sheer black tights, demonstrating her ability to blend historical fashion with contemporary style.
The renewed interest in vintage fashion, as exemplified by Carpenter’s recent appearances, reflects a growing trend among celebrities who are increasingly looking to the past for inspiration. As she continues to make headlines with her unique style, Carpenter solidifies her place as one of pop culture’s most exciting fashion revivalists.
