Rev. John Gibbs, a dedicated pastor and chaplain, passed away peacefully on December 27, 2025, at Viewcrest Health Center in Duluth, MN. He was 74 years old. Born on November 23, 1951, in La Crosse, WI, he was the son of C. Dorance and Joan Elston Gibbs. His lifelong commitment to ministry began at an early age, marked by his baptism and confirmation at the First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse.

Gibbs graduated from Central High School in 1970 and pursued higher education at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1974. His theological journey continued at Princeton University, where he earned a Master of Divinity Degree in 1977, supported by his home church.

In January 1978, Gibbs was ordained into the Presbyterian Church while serving as assistant pastor in Macomb, Illinois. Throughout his career, he held several pastoral positions before becoming the Director of Chaplaincy Services at St. Mary’s Hospital in Duluth. His 21 years in this role left a significant impact on the community and those he served.

Legacy of Service and Family

Rev. Gibbs’s commitment to his faith extended beyond his professional life. He was a devoted father to his son, Mark Gibbs, whom he adopted while serving at the Town and Country Presbyterian Church in Richland Center, WI. Mark was a central part of Gibbs’s life, and he expressed gratitude daily for the opportunity to raise him.

Gibbs is survived by his son Mark, his sister Kathleen (Gilbert) Nimm, and several nieces and a great-nephew. He also leaves behind many close friends and colleagues who will remember him fondly. He was preceded in death by his parents, C. Dorance and Joan Gibbs.

In accordance with Gibbs’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. He was known for his humility, compassion, and grace, striving to serve others throughout his life. Those wishing to honor his memory are encouraged to donate to local food pantries or school lunch programs, reflecting his belief that no child should go hungry.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Essentia Health Hospice and Viewcrest Health Center for their compassionate care during Gibbs’s final days. Arrangements are being handled by the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Duluth.
