The Catholic Charities Higher Ground Minneapolis shelter is extending its hours this weekend in response to dangerously low temperatures expected in the area. The shelter, situated at 165 Glenwood Ave, will remain open continuously from Saturday morning until 10 a.m. on Monday, providing warmth and safety for those in need during the severe cold snap.

Typically, the shelter operates from 4 p.m. to 10 a.m. daily, but the decision to extend daytime hours was made to offer people a place to stay during the frigid conditions predicted by the National Weather Service (NWS). According to the NWS, wind chill values are anticipated to plummet into the range of -15 to -30 degrees Celsius, with some forecasts suggesting temperatures could feel as low as -35 degrees Celsius.

These severe weather conditions pose significant risks, with the NWS warning that exposure to these temperatures can lead to frostbite in as little as ten minutes. The organization has communicated these dangers via their official social media channels, urging residents to take precautions.

Shelter staff will be on hand throughout the extended hours to provide vital services to those seeking refuge. Individuals will have access to hot meals, showers, and essential cold-weather supplies. This initiative aims to ensure that vulnerable populations have a safe haven during what is expected to be one of the coldest weekends in recent memory.

The outreach comes at a critical time, as the city faces not only the challenges of extreme weather but also the ongoing need to support its homeless population. Local agencies continue to monitor the situation and coordinate efforts to help those affected by the cold.

As Minneapolis braces for the severe weather, residents are reminded to check in on neighbors and utilize available resources. The Higher Ground shelter’s expanded hours represent a community effort to address immediate needs and provide a safe environment for all during this harsh winter period.
