Lakeview Community Schools Celebrate at National Tree Lighting

Representatives from Lakeview Community Schools traveled nearly 700 miles to attend the National Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C., on December 4, 2023. Superintendent Kelly Nielsen, Principal Tiffany Jackson, and teachers Kris Kirshman and Marney Ryan were among the attendees, who gathered to celebrate the festive occasion and showcase their students’ creativity.

The highlight of the event for the Lakeview representatives was not only the national Christmas tree but also a smaller tree adorned with ornaments crafted by third-grade students from Lakeview Elementary School. These students, now fourth-graders, designed the ornaments last spring, reflecting their personal interpretations of Michigan’s unique beauty. Their creations featured elements such as robins, loons, Great Lakes beaches, and the iconic Mackinac Bridge.

A Special Representation of Michigan

The Michigan-themed ornaments were among 59 trees representing each U.S. state, territory, and the District of Columbia, along with contributions from the Bureau of Indian Education and the Department of Defense Education Activities. This display is set in the White House Presidents Park, where the students’ artwork adds a personal touch to the national celebration.

The students were initially unaware of the significance of their project, which they had been told was a “secret mission.” They learned the outcome during a special assembly in mid-November attended by local officials, including State Representative Pat Outman. The excitement culminated when Lakeview Elementary was selected through a National Park Foundation lottery to receive four tickets for the National Tree Lighting Ceremony, allowing the educators to participate in this prestigious event.

Impactful Experience for Students and Staff

Teacher Marney Ryan expressed the joy of witnessing students’ reactions when the secret mission was revealed. She noted, “My favorite part of this project was seeing the kids’ and parents’ faces in awe when we announced what the actual ‘Christmas mission’ was and whose ornaments were selected.” The experience of standing beside the National Tree with their Michigan tree, decorated with Lakeview’s ornaments, left a lasting impression on all involved.

Kris Kirshman also reflected on the journey, stating, “This was a truly impactful and phenomenal experience. It was rewarding to see the reactions on the kids’ faces the day their secret mission was revealed.” Being present at such a significant national event provided a unique opportunity for the educators and their students alike.

Principal Tiffany Jackson emphasized the collaborative effort that went into creating the ornaments. She remarked, “Our staff worked with students to be creative, but what an honor it was to be present at the lighting of the trees.” The Lakeview community’s support was also highlighted during local ceremonies, where they celebrated the lighting of the village tree.
