Dallas Morning News Celebrates APSE Awards and Triple Crown Win
The Dallas Morning News has achieved significant recognition by extending its streak among the top 10 sports sections in the United States, as reported in the recent Associated Press Sports Editors (APSE) Contest. The publication’s SportsDay section earned accolades in five writing categories and secured a prestigious APSE Triple Crown, which recognizes excellence in print portfolio, digital section, and event coverage.
The results, which were revealed during the annual APSE convention held in Las Vegas, highlight the competition’s rigorous standards. Although the APSE does not rank its top 10 in the section competition, the announcement of top rankings for writing awards will occur next month. The Dallas Morning News was one of only eight newspapers in the largest circulation category to achieve the Triple Crown distinction, showcasing its commitment to quality journalism.
Reflecting on this achievement, Tommy Magelssen, the third sports editor since Dave Smith retired in 2004, emphasized the evolution of sports journalism. He stated, “There’s no question that sports journalism has changed dramatically since Dave Smith made this section what it is, but this haul of silverware shows we can still compete with the very best in the nation.”
The staff of SportsDay excelled in five out of nine writing categories, including columns, beat reporting, breaking news, event coverage, and high school writing. Notably, the team received recognition for their coverage of the aftermath of Luka Doncic’s surprising trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers, a topic that sparked considerable discussion among fans and analysts alike.
In the breaking news category, Jamie Landers and Elissa Jorgensen were acknowledged for their reporting on the tragic death of Marshawn Kneeland, a player for the Dallas Cowboys. Additionally, Greg Riddle, who has been covering high school sports in Dallas since 2005, made the top 10 in the newly introduced category of high school beat writing.
As SportsDay continues to build on its legacy, it remains dedicated to producing high-quality sports journalism that resonates with readers across various platforms. The recognition from APSE not only underscores the talent within the team but also reinforces the importance of their work in the evolving landscape of sports media.
The Dallas Morning News continues to engage readers with timely updates and insightful analysis, ensuring that sports enthusiasts stay informed about the latest developments in the world of sports. For subscribers who wish to follow ongoing coverage, the publication offers newsletters that deliver the latest sports news directly to their inboxes.
