Accompanied by his 99-year-old father, Jim Rush, Jimmy walked into the restaurant on October 7, 2023, to celebrate his birthday and finally take advantage of the offer for free oysters.

The promotion, which has hung on the wall at Wintzell’s for decades, states that any man who turns 80 and is accompanied by his father is entitled to a complimentary dozen oysters. Jimmy, who has frequented the restaurant with his father since 1972, had been eagerly anticipating this moment for years. “I never thought about any birthdays except my 80th,” he shared. “That’s the one I was looking forward to — because of the sign.”

The family made the occasion a grand event, with approximately 60 friends and relatives gathering to celebrate. Carl Rush, Jimmy’s brother, mentioned that discussions about the promotion had been ongoing for decades. “We felt like our dad was going to make it to 100 because he’s in great health.
