80-Year-Old Man Celebrates Birthday with Free Oysters in Alabama
An extraordinary family milestone unfolded at Wintzell’s Oyster House in Mobile, Alabama, when an 80-year-old man, Jimmy Rush, claimed a long-awaited promotion that has been available since the 1930s. Accompanied by his 99-year-old father, Jim Rush, Jimmy walked into the restaurant on October 7, 2023, to celebrate his birthday and finally take advantage of the offer for free oysters.
The promotion, which has hung on the wall at Wintzell’s for decades, states that any man who turns 80 and is accompanied by his father is entitled to a complimentary dozen oysters. Jimmy, who has frequented the restaurant with his father since 1972, had been eagerly anticipating this moment for years. “I never thought about any birthdays except my 80th,” he shared. “That’s the one I was looking forward to — because of the sign.”
The family made the occasion a grand event, with approximately 60 friends and relatives gathering to celebrate. Carl Rush, Jimmy’s brother, mentioned that discussions about the promotion had been ongoing for decades. “We felt like our dad was going to make it to 100 because he’s in great health. We’ve been talking about it as a family for 25, 30 years,” Carl stated.
As the family celebrated, Wintzell’s honored the promotion as promised, serving Jimmy a dozen free oysters. When asked if anyone had previously claimed the offer, the restaurant confirmed that this was indeed a first. “We’re the number ones,” Jim Rush, a World War II and Korean War veteran, proudly announced.
The restaurant even shared the moment on social media, emphasizing the uniqueness of the occasion. “Most people read that sign behind the bar and laugh,” they noted, but on this special night, the Rush family transformed a longstanding tradition into a memorable event.
Looking ahead, the family is already planning a return visit for Carl’s 80th birthday in two years, which would coincide with Jim’s 102nd birthday. “We will be back to do this all over again in October of 2028 when I turn 80,” Carl remarked. “My dad says he’s going to make it, so that’s good enough for me.”
Jim Rush, who attributes his longevity to a positive outlook and good care, shared his secret to living well: “I’ve been very lucky and very well taken care of through my God.” With each passing year, the Rush family continues to celebrate life together in remarkable ways, turning simple traditions into cherished memories.
