Trump Criticizes Kennedy Family Hours After Granddaughter’s Death
The death of Tatiana Schlossberg, granddaughter of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy, at the age of 35 from leukemia, has been overshadowed by a controversial reaction from former President Donald Trump. Hours after the announcement of her passing on October 29, 2023, Trump resurfaced social media posts critical of the Kennedy family, sparking outrage.
The Kennedy family shared the news of Schlossberg’s death with a heartfelt statement: “Our beautiful Tatiana passed away this morning. She will always be in our hearts.” As condolences flooded in from various quarters, Trump appeared to pivot to prior grievances regarding the Kennedy family’s involvement with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
In a notable context, the Kennedy Center’s board recently voted to rename the venue to include Trump’s name. This decision has faced considerable backlash, as many view the center as a living memorial to JFK, established following his assassination in 1963. Reports indicate that Trump expressed frustration over performance cancellations related to this name change, leading him to share posts from supporters on his platform, Truth Social.
Among the resurfaced comments was a message stating, “The Kennedy Family have LONG neglected the Kennedy Center, btw. They don’t raise money for it. They never show up.” Another post noted, “The Trumps have always been supporters of the arts. The Kennedys are supporters of the Kennedys.” These remarks have been perceived as particularly insensitive, given the timing of Schlossberg’s death.
Schlossberg had previously documented her battle with leukemia in an article for The New Yorker, detailing a challenging year that coincided with her cousin Robert Kennedy Jr. publicly criticizing the nation’s health systems. Her articulate account of personal struggle contrasted sharply with the ensuing public discourse following her death.
The Kennedy family has been vocal in their response to the name change of the Kennedy Center, emphasizing its significance as a tribute to JFK. Prominent media figures, including CNN’s Jake Tapper, condemned Trump’s actions. Tapper described the sequence of events: “In the early afternoon, ET, the Kennedy family announced that JFK’s granddaughter Tatiana Schlossberg had died from cancer. A few hours later, President Trump re-posted some social media garbage attacking the Kennedy family.”
Critics have characterized Trump’s posts as a demonstration of “cruelty and utter lack of basic human decency.” The political ramifications of his actions continue to unfold, as the public reacts to his repeated use of social media to target and undermine individuals, especially in moments of grief.
The juxtaposition of personal loss and political maneuvering in this instance highlights the ongoing complexities of public life in contemporary politics. As the Kennedy family mourns, many are left to ponder the appropriateness of Trump’s comments during such a sensitive time.
