Jaden Ivey Undergoes Swift Knee Surgery, Aims for Quick Return
Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey recently underwent a swift arthroscopic procedure on his right knee, just a week before the start of the regular season. This surgery follows a challenging rehabilitation period for Ivey, who previously dealt with a left fibula injury for nearly nine months. His recovery has been marred by knee discomfort that surfaced during his training to return to the court.
During a recent appearance on The Zach Lowe Show, Trajan Langdon, the Pistons’ president of basketball operations, provided insights into the nature of Ivey’s surgery. He described the procedure as a cleanup operation necessary due to loose cartilage particles found in Ivey’s knee. Langdon emphasized the procedure’s efficiency, stating, “He was literally in the surgery room for 15 minutes. It was quick.”
As of the recording on October 22, 2023, Ivey was already walking again and beginning his rehabilitation. J.B. Bickerstaff, the Pistons’ head coach, noted that the discomfort in Ivey’s knee developed gradually as he attempted to regain fitness after appearing in only 30 games last season—missing the postseason entirely.
The Pistons organization remains optimistic about Ivey’s return as a vital player for the current season. Before his injury, he had impressive averages of 17.6 points and four assists per game, while shooting 46% from the field and 40.9% from three-point range. Langdon expressed confidence in Ivey’s athleticism and commitment, saying, “He had a great summer, so he’s going to get back off this quick.”
The team is prioritizing Ivey’s health over a rushed return. Langdon stated, “Our biggest thing with him is let’s make sure you get back healthy and we keep you back.” He acknowledged the challenges associated with recovering from Ivey’s previous ankle injury while maintaining a positive outlook on his mindset and determination.
Currently, there is no specific timeline for Ivey’s return. The Pistons initially announced plans to re-evaluate him after four weeks, and Langdon confirmed that this estimate remains in place for now. As the season progresses, fans and teammates alike will be watching closely for updates on Ivey’s recovery and return to the playing court.
