Amber King Transforms Fitness Landscape in Princeville, Illinois
Amber King, a dedicated personal trainer and fitness instructor, has carved out a niche in the fitness industry over the past 18 years. Based in Princeville, Illinois, a village with a population of just under 1,800, King initially began teaching group fitness as a means to cover her gym membership costs. “I actually started teaching group fitness as a way to not have to pay for my gym membership,” she explains. Today, her journey has evolved into a thriving personal training business and a long-standing relationship with the Stephens Family YMCA, where she has worked since 2012.
King holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Illinois State University and a master’s in urban planning from the University of Illinois. Her approach to fitness is deeply personal, emphasizing the importance of movement in everyday life. “Movement has been foundational in my life. I’ve always found great joy in movement, strength, and connection with others,” King shares. Her philosophy includes flexibility for clients, as they can choose to train indoors or outdoors, and she aims to cultivate a blend of “friendliness, courage, movement, increased strength, mobility, and joy.”
Building a Community Through Fitness
In a recent interview, King reflected on her journey and the values that guide her work. Her commitment to her clients is evident, as she believes in the importance of taking care of one’s body to sustain a career in fitness. “We work hard, but we recover harder,” she states, underlining her dedication to setting a positive example.
Her leadership philosophy emphasizes communication and connection. King prefers to keep meetings concise, often suggesting, “Make it an email or text if possible, and if not, what can I feed people while we meet?” This practical approach not only streamlines her interactions but also fosters a welcoming environment for her clients and colleagues.
One of her most gratifying moments came when a client transitioned from being trained by her to leading her own fitness classes. “I loved having a front-row seat to seeing her confidence and competency grow,” King recalls, highlighting the impact she has made on others.
Daily Life and Future Aspirations
As a mother, King balances her professional responsibilities with family life, often referring to her second shift at home as a “chef, chauffeur, maid.” Her mornings begin early, often by 6:30 a.m., to prepare for the day ahead. “The first thing I do when I get to work is double-check my client schedule to see what equipment I need to get out,” she notes.
King’s professional inspirations include Ali Kreider of Ali K Fitness, whom she admires for building a sense of community and promoting the joy of movement rather than viewing fitness as a punishment. Her future goals are ambitious; she aims to earn a black belt in taekwondo by the age of 50.
Beyond her professional life, King enjoys a variety of activities, including reading and indulging in local cuisine. She recently enjoyed “My Friends” by Fredrik Backman and often opts for sushi from Harvest Market or salad from Sun Singer for lunch.
King’s journey from a gym member to a fitness leader exemplifies the power of passion and dedication in transforming one’s life and the lives of others. As she continues to inspire clients in Princeville, her story serves as a reminder of the profound impact that personal commitment can have on a community.
