Stephen Amell Reveals Ambitious Plans for Cancelled Heels Season 3
Stephen Amell, known for his role as Jack Spade, has shared intriguing details about a potential third season of the sports drama Heels, which was cancelled in September 2023. The series debuted on Starz in August 2021, exploring the dynamics within a fictional professional wrestling promotion in a small town in Georgia. It focused on the intense rivalry between brothers Jack and Ace Spade, particularly following their father’s death.
Despite receiving critical acclaim, with a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Heels was part of a larger wave of cancellations that hit several original series on Starz. The show has since found renewed visibility after being added to Netflix, prompting discussions about its potential revival.
Amell’s Vision for Season 3
During the Arrowverse Heroes panel at Motor City Comic Con, moderated by Joe Deckelmeier from ScreenRant, Amell reflected on the show’s two-season journey and expressed his hopes for four or five seasons. He revealed that the envisioned third season would include a significant time jump, transitioning Jack Spade from the small town of Duffy to the “big leagues” of professional wrestling.
Amell explained, “I know that our current showrunner for the second season, Mike O’Malley, had an idea that the third season would actually jump forward a little bit in time. The first two seasons were supposed to be primarily in Duffy, and we would have then expanded the universe after.”
In this proposed narrative shift, Jack’s character would leave Duffy behind, introducing audiences to a broader wrestling landscape. While the first season set the stage within the confines of the town, the anticipated direction for season three would have explored new territories within the wrestling world.
Future Prospects for Heels
Comments from both Amell and O’Malley indicate a hopeful outlook for the series’ revival. O’Malley has mentioned that Jack would need to confront an injury sustained in what became the show’s final episode. Although no firm plans for revival have been announced, the presence of Heels on Netflix has sparked optimism among fans and creators alike.
“The chance will remain viable as long as Heels finds an audience and a second streaming life,” said Michael Waldron, the writer for Avengers: Doomsday.
As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, the show’s alignment with professional wrestling, especially following Netflix‘s acquisition of global WWE rights, positions Heels as a complementary series. This connection could bolster its chances of returning to screens, allowing fans to engage further with the Spade brothers’ saga.
While the future of Heels remains uncertain, Amell’s insights have reignited interest in the series and its potential for a third season. The wrestling drama’s ability to capture the hearts of its audience may very well play a crucial role in determining its fate.
