Olivia Dean Dazzles on SNL with Two Dynamic Performances
British singer-songwriter Olivia Dean made a memorable debut on Saturday Night Live by performing two songs from her second studio album, The Art of Loving, which was released in September 2023. Her performances showcased her lyrical depth and engaging stage presence, marking a significant moment in her burgeoning career.
Dean began with “Man I Need,” a track that she describes as “about knowing how you deserve to be loved and not being afraid to ask for it.” In a statement made upon the song’s release earlier this year, Dean emphasized its lively nature, calling it “forward, sexy, fun! It’s made for dancing!” The song was co-written with Zach Nahome and Tobias Jesso Jr., who won the 2023 Grammy for Songwriter of the Year and is nominated again this year.
For her second performance, Dean took the stage with “Let Alone the One You Love,” the sixth track from her latest album. She shared insights into her creative process via Instagram, revealing that much of the album was recorded in a studio built in a house in East London. “For eight weeks, we lived in the house of loving! I brought my piano from home and all my favourite people and tried to create things that felt like warmth,” Dean explained. “Here you have a piece of my heart!”
Critics have praised The Art of Loving for its vibrant sound and Dean’s captivating presence. In a review by Rolling Stone’s Larisha Paul, the album is described as showcasing Dean’s “star power” that extends beyond mere charisma. The review highlights her ability to perform in perfect harmony with her band, navigating through a rich tapestry of instruments with an impressive level of detail.
As her star continues to rise, Dean recently announced dates for her upcoming tour, titled The Art of Loving, which will span 14 cities. The tour kicks off in San Francisco, California, in July 2024 and will make its way to the east coast, concluding in Austin, Texas, in late August. In recent weeks, Dean has been gaining visibility as the opening act for Sabrina Carpenter’s Short n’ Sweet tour, as well as Sam Fender’s People Watching tour, where she previously collaborated with Fender on the single “Rein Me In.”
With her undeniable talent and growing recognition, Olivia Dean is poised to capture even more attention in the music industry as she embarks on this new chapter of her career.
