New Musical ‘Dypsy!’ Based on Gypsy Rose Blanchard Set for London
A new musical titled Dypsy! is scheduled to debut in London’s West End in 2026. Created by Parkinson Phillips Productions, the musical serves as a parody inspired by the life of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, a figure at the center of one of the most sensational true crime stories in recent history. The production has been in development since 2024 and aims to explore society’s fixation on true crime through high-energy comedy and original music.
The musical, featuring lyrics by Samuel Parkinson-Philips and music composed by Rachel Blaquière, promises to deliver a unique blend of satire, comedy, and theatrical absurdity. The story revolves around the tragic events that unfolded in 2016 when Gypsy Rose, then 17 years old, conspired with her boyfriend, Nicolas Godejohn, to murder her mother, Claudine ‘Dee Dee’ Blanchard. Godejohn entered their home in Springfield, Missouri, and fatally attacked Dee Dee as she slept, a crime that shocked the nation and ignited widespread media coverage.
In a statement about the project, Parkinson-Philips noted, “The story of Gypsy Rose Blanchard continues to spark global conversation, raising important issues around psychological manipulation, medical abuse, and the condition known as Munchausen syndrome by proxy.” He emphasized that while Dypsy! is a parody, it aims to foster understanding of difficult subjects often left unaddressed.
Throughout her childhood, Gypsy Rose was led to believe she suffered from multiple illnesses, including leukemia and muscular dystrophy. Dee Dee is believed to have had Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental health condition where a caregiver fabricates or induces illness in someone under their care. This complex and disturbing family dynamic has been the subject of various media adaptations, including the 2017 documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest and the 2019 Hulu series The Act, where Gypsy Rose was portrayed by actress Joey King.
“By blending musical theatre with true crime, we’re creating something genuinely unique — and that’s incredibly exciting,”
Parkinson-Philips remarked. He expressed hope that audiences will leave the show both laughing and reflecting on the issues it presents.
Dypsy! will take cues from other successful parody productions like Titanique and Oh, Mary!, using exaggerated storytelling to reframe Gypsy Rose’s harrowing tale. The creative team believes the musical will resonate with audiences by addressing the fine line between entertainment and tragedy.
Since her release from prison, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, now 34 years old, has made significant life changes. She divorced her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson, and welcomed a daughter named Aurora in 2022 with her current boyfriend, Ken Urker.
As anticipation builds for the London debut, Dypsy! is poised to join the conversation surrounding true crime narratives and their impact on society, all while delivering a vibrant theatrical experience.
