Chanhassen Dinner Theatres Launches New Era with ‘Guys and Dolls’
Chanhassen Dinner Theatres has commenced a new chapter with the opening of its latest production, “Guys and Dolls,” on September 22, 2023. This marks the inaugural show under the direction of Tamara Kangas Erickson, a seasoned figure at the venue who has served as the resident choreographer for over two decades. Kangas Erickson steps into her new role following the unexpected passing of Michael Brindisi last year, making her appointment a pivotal moment for the theatre.
“Guys and Dolls,” which is renowned for its vibrant musical score and engaging story, is based on short stories by Damon Runyon that explore the lives of gamblers and gangsters amidst the backdrop of New York City. Composed by Frank Loesser with a book by Jo Swerling and Abe Burrows, the original Broadway production debuted in 1950, receiving critical acclaim and winning five Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its legacy endures, having been revived numerous times across the globe.
Under Kangas Erickson’s direction, the production draws inspiration from the 2023 London revival directed by Nicholas Hytner. This version utilized an in-the-round staging approach, enhancing the audience’s experience. At Chanhassen, Kangas Erickson has opted for a dynamic setup, avoiding a fixed set in favor of movable pieces that create distinct environments throughout the performance. This innovative design encourages actors to engage more closely with the audience, amplifying the overall energy of the show.
The cast features many familiar talents from Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, but Kangas Erickson has made a notable choice to include new actors in three of the four lead roles. This decision appears to signal her intention to honor the theatre’s storied past while infusing fresh perspectives into the productions.
Kangas Erickson collaborated with Broadway veteran Linda Talcott Lee, known for her Emmy Award-winning work on “The Comedy Hall of Fame with Jason Alexander,” as co-choreographer. Their partnership has resulted in captivating dance sequences that highlight CDT’s reputation for exceptional performers. The choreography in “Guys and Dolls” is particularly impressive, with exhilarating dance numbers that stand out in recent memory.
Costume designer Rich Hamson has contributed to the visual splendor of the show with a dazzling array of outfits. The rich jewel tones of the costumes are complemented by innovative lighting design from Sue Ellen Berger, creating a vibrant and immersive atmosphere.
While the production excels in energy and performance, the narrative itself presents some challenges. The storyline, which can be described as rather simplistic, contains elements that reflect outdated gender norms that may not resonate well with contemporary audiences. Despite these issues, “Guys and Dolls” remains a sensory delight that showcases the talents of its cast and crew.
The show runs until September 26, 2023, at Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, located at 501 W. 78th St., Chanhassen, Minnesota. Tickets are priced between $146.98 and $92.54, available through the theatre’s box office or website.
In summary, Tamara Kangas Erickson’s directorial debut with “Guys and Dolls” marks a significant moment for Chanhassen Dinner Theatres, blending tradition with innovation. The production not only celebrates the theatre’s legacy but also paves the way for a new era of creativity and artistic expression.
