Cara Buono Discusses Karen Wheeler’s Bold Transformation in Season 5
The character of Karen Wheeler in the popular Netflix series Stranger Things has taken on a more prominent role in the recently released season five. Portrayed by Cara Buono, Karen has transitioned from a background figure to a key player, particularly when a minion of the antagonist Vecna threatens her family. This pivotal moment unfolds in the family’s home, which is famously known for its basement where the young characters bonded over their love for Dungeons & Dragons.
In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Buono shared insights into Karen’s evolution. This season, Karen confronts challenges that force her to step out of her comfort zone. “Suddenly Karen’s thrust into the unbelievable,” Buono noted, highlighting the character’s journey from denial and coping with wine to taking a stand against the dangers surrounding her family.
Wine Mom’s Fighting Spirit
Karen’s weapon of choice—a broken wine bottle—serves as a metaphor for her coping mechanisms. Buono elaborated on how the character’s reliance on wine reflects her struggles. “I always said she’s kind of a high-functioning closet alcoholic,” she explained. For Karen, a preference for white wine, specifically chardonnay, stems from her desire to avoid spills on her white rug, symbolizing her attempts to maintain an appearance of control.
Despite the tense atmosphere in Hawkins, which is currently under military lockdown, Buono’s portrayal of Karen introduces a layer of resilience. “Karen knows where to get the wine,” she said, indicating that even in dire circumstances, she remains resourceful and determined to access her supplies. This includes not just wine but also nail polish, showcasing her commitment to a semblance of normalcy amid chaos.
Character Development Through Adversity
The challenges faced by Karen Wheeler this season are compounded by the restrictions placed on the town. Buono mentioned how she crafted a narrative around Karen’s ability to acquire contraband items, including cigarettes and mascara, while under quarantine. This detail not only adds depth to her character but also offers a glimpse into the realities faced by residents of Hawkins.
As the series progresses, viewers may notice changes in Karen’s appearance, particularly her hair. Buono humorously noted, “It gets a little sad looking in season five because they’re under quarantine without a lot of access to the good hair products.” Such details provide a relatable element to the character, highlighting the impact of the unfolding events on her everyday life.
Fans can look forward to more episodes of Stranger Things, which will be released on December 25 and December 31. As Karen’s character continues to evolve, her journey promises to captivate audiences, showcasing the strength and resilience of a mother determined to protect her family in extraordinary circumstances.
