BBC Secures Future of Hit Shows with Multi-Year Renewals
The BBC has solidified the future of two of its most successful reality competition shows, The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors, through a new multi-year agreement. This deal ensures that both series will remain on air for several more seasons, extending their presence until at least 2030.
Outgoing BBC director-general Tim Davie announced the renewal during a speech at the Royal Television Society, highlighting a three-year deal that begins with Season 5 of The Traitors. The contract also guarantees additional seasons, with the main series expected to reach a total of at least eight seasons. The BBC has already scheduled Seasons 5, 6, 7, and 8 for 2027, 2028, 2029, and 2030, respectively.
Continuing Success of Celebrity Edition
In tandem with the renewal of the main series, The Celebrity Traitors will continue its successful run, with Season 2 set to premiere in 2026 and additional seasons planned through 2029. The celebrity version of the show first aired on BBC One and iPlayer in October 2025, garnering impressive ratings with an average of 14.9 million viewers. Its finale attracted 15.4 million viewers, making it the highest-performing entertainment episode in the UK in nearly a decade, according to the BBC.
The fourth season of The Traitors also achieved significant audience figures, recording a 12.5 million average audience over a 28-day period. These figures demonstrate the growing popularity of both shows, which have captivated viewers across the nation.
Kalpna Patel-Knight, Head of Entertainment Commissioning at the BBC, expressed pride in the network’s commitment to these shows. She stated, “We are proud to remain faithful to The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors until 2030 and wanted to say a big thank you to the outstanding team at Studio Lambert Scotland for bringing it to screen.”
Stephen Lambert, CEO of Studio Lambert, emphasized the show’s international appeal, saying, “The Traitors has become a genuine television phenomenon across the world, but especially in the UK, and we’re thrilled to continue the journey with the BBC.”
The format was originally created by IDTV, an All3Media company based in the Netherlands, with development support from the RTL Creative Unit. The UK versions are produced by Studio Lambert, while All3Media International oversees global format and tape sales. Production takes place at the historic Ardross Castle estate, adding a unique backdrop to the series.
The BBC’s decision to renew both shows reflects their significant impact on the network’s programming and their ability to engage audiences. As reality television continues to evolve, The Traitors and The Celebrity Traitors seem poised to remain at the forefront of British entertainment for years to come.
