AEW Faces Backlash Over Trey Miguel’s Abrupt Release
The wrestling community is reacting strongly to the recent release of Trey Miguel from All Elite Wrestling (AEW), following a brief hiring that ended before he could make his debut. Miguel was set to join the faction known as The Rascalz, alongside noted wrestlers Zachary Wentz, Dezmond Xavier, and Myron Reed, but was cut from the roster within days. This decision has prompted frustration among AEW talent and raised questions about potential double standards within the organization.
According to a report from Fightful Select, the decision to terminate Miguel’s contract is believed to have originated from Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), rather than from AEW management. This revelation has left many fans puzzled, as AEW is primarily overseen by its founder, Tony Khan. The swift action against Miguel reportedly stems from a controversial social media post he made in 2020, which was viewed as homophobic. It is important to note that Miguel publicly apologized for the post shortly after it was made, acknowledging his past mistakes and expressing a commitment to moving forward positively.
Internal sources within AEW have expressed their dissatisfaction with the handling of Miguel’s release. Many within the promotion have pointed out that other individuals affiliated with WBD have faced little to no repercussions for past controversial statements, leading to accusations of inconsistency in disciplinary measures.
A spokesperson from Warner Bros. commented on the situation, stating, “I can’t speak to the validity of rumors, but I can’t say I agree with the decision if true. If it were an unhealthy pattern of behavior, that’s cause for alarm, but that does not seem to be the case here.” The absence of AEW’s involvement in the decision-making process has only heightened the sense of frustration among staff and performers.
Critics argue that the circumstances surrounding Trey Miguel’s dismissal highlight a troubling precedent in how talent is treated based on past actions, especially when compared to others who have not faced similar consequences for their behavior. The wrestling industry has long been scrutinized for its handling of controversial figures, and this incident adds another layer of complexity to ongoing discussions about accountability and fairness.
As the wrestling community continues to analyze the implications of this incident, the focus remains on the potential impact on AEW’s reputation and the morale of its talent. With WBD’s influence evident in this decision, the relationship between AEW and its parent company may be under more scrutiny than ever before.
