Startup Founder Leaves Meta for AI Revolution in Business Calls

Ruchir Baronia left his position at Meta to establish Frontdesk, an AI startup designed to automate business calls. This transition from a well-paying role in a leading tech company to entrepreneurship was not made lightly. Today, Baronia’s AI receptionist handles millions of calls, providing businesses with an innovative solution to enhance customer engagement.

Baronia’s journey into the tech world began at a young age. He recalls pacing in his bedroom, testing a voice app he had created. His early coding projects, including a text-to-speech application, showcased his passion for technology and its potential to make a difference. “My clearest memory from middle school is pacing in my bedroom, phone in hand, repeating the word ‘wake’ again and again,” he said. The realization that his code could impact others sparked a lifelong ambition.

After studying engineering and business at UC Berkeley, Baronia spent nearly two years at Meta, where he worked on a fintech team. His role allowed him to see the massive scale of technology’s impact. Yet, despite the allure of a comfortable salary and a supportive work environment, he felt a growing desire to reconnect with the business side of technology.

In 2016, a personal event motivated Baronia to create a life-saving app named Rescuer. Inspired by a family member’s accident, he developed a voice application that enabled users to send emergency alerts by shouting a secret phrase. This project received recognition from various political officials, reinforcing his belief in technology’s potential for real-world impact.

The turning point for Baronia came in 2023 when ChatGPT gained significant attention. He envisioned a prototype that could connect AI to traditional phone lines. While the initial prototype faced challenges such as latency and reliability, it sparked a question in Baronia’s mind: What if this technology could assist businesses in managing customer interactions?

The decision to leave Meta was difficult. Baronia had offers to work in prestigious finance and engineering roles, yet he felt compelled to pursue his vision. In February 2025, he made the leap, moving from California to New York City and founding Frontdesk. The startup aims to streamline customer communication by automating scheduling and follow-ups, enabling businesses to respond to customer needs effectively.

Frontdesk operates from an office in SoHo, where Baronia leads a team of former tech professionals who share similar backgrounds. Many of them, like Baronia, left lucrative positions at companies such as Microsoft and Amazon to pursue their entrepreneurial ambitions. “I feel lucky to work with people who push me to be better every day,” Baronia emphasized.

The work environment remains reminiscent of his early coding days. Baronia often finds himself pacing while testing the AI systems, but now the stakes are much higher. His AI receptionist technology is designed to address the critical issue of customer retention, where missed calls can lead to lost business opportunities.

Baronia’s story exemplifies the tensions faced by many in the tech industry, balancing the comfort of established careers with the drive to innovate and create meaningful change. “The phones are still ringing, and the models are still getting better,” he noted, reflecting on the ongoing evolution of his technology.

As Frontdesk continues to grow, Baronia’s commitment to leveraging technology for positive impact remains at the forefront of his mission.
