MacKenzie Scott Donates $7.1 Billion to Nonprofits in 2025

Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott announced her donation of $7.1 billion to various nonprofits in 2025, significantly increasing her annual contributions from previous years. In an essay published on her website, Scott emphasized the importance of community support, stating, “This dollar total will likely be reported in the news, but any dollar amount is a vanishingly tiny fraction of the personal expressions of care being shared into communities this year.”

Scott’s philanthropic efforts have gained considerable attention due to their unrestricted nature, often making up a large portion of the annual budgets for recipient organizations. To date, she has donated a remarkable total of $26.3 billion since 2019. Her wealth, estimated at $33 billion, primarily stems from Amazon shares acquired during her divorce from company founder Jeff Bezos.

Significant Contributions to Education and Equity

This year, over a dozen historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) collectively received $783 million from Scott. This information was reported by Marybeth Gasman, a professor at Rutgers University and an expert on HBCUs. Gasman remarked on the significance of Scott’s contributions, especially amid ongoing discussions around equity in education, noting that her gifts to HBCUs this time surpass those made in 2020.

The donations are notable not just for their size but also for their lack of strings attached. For example, Kim Mazzuca, CEO of the California-based nonprofit 10,000 Degrees, expressed her astonishment upon receiving a $42 million donation from Scott, which is approximately double her organization’s annual budget.

Mazzuca explained that this funding would enable her organization to expand its outreach and enhance its services for low-income students, allowing them to graduate without incurring debt. She highlighted Scott’s approach as one that recognizes the potential of individuals and communities, stating, “She comes from a very deep, reflective space, very heartfelt.”

In addition to HBCUs, organizations such as the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) received $70 million, which will be invested in a collective endowment for participating HBCUs.
