Cubs’ Imanaga Enters Free Agency After Contract Options Rejected
BREAKING: Chicago Cubs left-handed starter Shota Imanaga has officially entered free agency following a series of contract rejections, sources confirm. The Cubs declined to extend his contract through 2028, leading Imanaga to reject a $15 million player option for the upcoming season. This pivotal decision opens the door for Imanaga to seek a long-term deal with a new team.
Time is of the essence as the Cubs must decide on offering a qualifying offer for the 2026 season by the end of this week. Should Imanaga decline this offer and sign elsewhere, the Cubs will receive draft pick compensation, making this a crucial moment for both the player and the organization.
Imanaga, aged 32, had a mixed performance last season, ending with a record of 9-8 and a 3.73 ERA over 25 starts. His performance waned towards the end of the season, highlighted by a troubling 6.51 ERA in September. Notably, he was overlooked for the pivotal Game 5 of the National League Division Series against the Milwaukee Brewers, where he warmed up in the bullpen but did not make an appearance.
Bursting onto the MLB scene in 2024, Imanaga initially impressed with a record of 15-3 and a stellar 2.91 ERA. His unique pitching style, featuring a rising fastball and deceptive splitter, captivated fans and analysts alike. However, as hitters became more familiar with his approach, his effectiveness declined, culminating in a concerning statistic: he surrendered 58 home runs during his two seasons with the Cubs.
The Cubs originally signed Imanaga to a four-year contract worth $53 million, which included a club option that would have extended the deal to five years and $80 million. By rejecting the $15 million player option for 2026, Imanaga is now positioned to explore other opportunities in the league.
As Imanaga navigates this critical juncture in his career, the baseball community is left watching closely. Will he return to form with a new team, or has the pressure of the big leagues taken its toll? With free agency underway, the next few days could determine the future for both Imanaga and the Cubs.
