URGENT UPDATE: A couple has turned their dream of owning a vacation home in the Pacific Northwest into reality by purchasing land and a trailer, despite skyrocketing housing prices. Sally Marks and Carol, inspired by their visits to Port Townsend, Washington, have embraced off-grid living on their newly acquired 4.6-acre property.

The couple’s journey began in 2010, during a vacation in the Olympic Peninsula. Captivated by the area’s kayaking, hiking, and vibrant community, they envisioned a second home but faced a daunting real estate market where properties often exceed $500,000. Their dream seemed out of reach until a real estate agent offered them a chance at a wooded lot, priced at $160,000.

After purchasing the land, sight unseen, in 2022, the couple ordered a $65,000 Airstream Basecamp to serve as their new home. With no access to power, water, or sewer, they committed to living off the grid. They installed portable solar panels, captured rainwater, and even set up a small battery-operated pump for convenience.

“Living off the grid has been an interesting adventure,” Marks stated. “We don’t regret our decision. The Pacific Northwest is now our home for three to five months a year.”

Adapting to this lifestyle has not been without challenges. The couple hauls water from a facility five miles away for drinking and cooking, and they employ energy conservation strategies for their devices. Their outdoor tent, equipped with a propane stove and dining area, serves as a cozy extension of their living space.

To stay active, Carol has joined a local band, using the tent as a rehearsal space. They also store Carol’s kayak at a nearby marina, giving them access to the region’s stunning waterways. Despite their commitment to conservation, they enjoy modern conveniences, including coin-operated hot showers.

As winter approaches, the couple prepares their property by servicing their lawn mower, adding gravel to dirt roads, and trimming trees before returning to their on-grid home in Arizona. Their experience highlights a growing trend among vacation home buyers seeking alternative living solutions amid rising housing costs.

“We have found a way to enjoy Washington without the hefty cost of homeownership,” Marks concluded, reflecting on their successful transition to off-grid living. As more individuals seek affordable housing options, their story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and adaptability.
