The Metropolitan Opera brings its acclaimed live simulcast series to Munson with a performance of Giacomo Puccini’s beloved opera, La Bohème, on November 8, 2023. The event will take place at 1 p.m. in the Sinnott Family–Bank of Utica Auditorium, located in Downtown Utica.

This production of La Bohème transports audiences to 19th-century Paris, where the enchanting setting and poignant score illustrate the lives of young friends and lovers navigating the complexities of bohemian life. Directed by the renowned Franco Zeffirelli, the performance promises to be a visual and emotional feast, highlighting the opera’s themes of love, loss, and the beauty of everyday moments.

Soprano Juliana Grigoryan stars as the ailing seamstress Mimi, opposite tenor Freddie De Tommaso, who plays the passionate poet Rodolfo. The performance will be conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, adding further depth to this cherished piece.

Puccini’s La Bohème is famous for its lyrical beauty, with melodies that resonate deeply with audiences. The opera’s structure captures the essence of its characters—the “small people,” as Puccini referred to them—through intimate details that evoke the emotional weight of their relationships. The score features small, incremental intervals that draw listeners into the narrative, contrasting with the dramatic leaps often found in earlier operatic works.

Tickets for this extraordinary experience are priced at $32, with discounted rates of $26 for Munson members and $16 for students. Tickets can be purchased by calling 315-797-0055 or online at munson.art/met-live.

Attendees can expect a captivating afternoon that showcases one of opera’s most enduring masterpieces, highlighting the timeless themes that continue to resonate with audiences across generations.
