Tech Enthusiast Transforms English Cottage with 10GbE Network
URGENT UPDATE: A tech enthusiast has successfully transformed his newly purchased English cottage into a high-speed smart home, prioritizing a cutting-edge 10 GbE LAN network over traditional renovations. This development, just confirmed today, highlights the potential of modern technology in rural areas.
The homeowner, who has recently acquired an old cottage in a remote location, is capitalizing on a rare fiber link established by Open Reach through their Fiber-To-The-Premises (FTTP) initiative. This improvement allows the cottage to boast super-fast internet connectivity, enabling the ambitious homeowner to prioritize technology over typical home improvements like painting or plaster repairs.
As soon as he received the keys on July 15, 2023, his thoughts quickly turned to the technical aspects of the house. While his wife envisioned the aesthetic changes, he was laser-focused on where to place the primary server and how to lay underground conduits between the cottage, office, and garage for maximum connectivity.
“This project is not just about connectivity; it’s about creating a seamless digital environment,” he stated. The homeowner meticulously planned the layout, identifying three key buildings: the main house, a small office outbuilding, and a detached garage. The layout allows for easy installation of underground conduit with minimal disruption to the lawn.
The installation process is underway, with the homeowner opting for 30-meter rolls of fiber to ensure robust connectivity between the three structures. “It’s overkill, but it guarantees no bottlenecks,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of future-proofing his network. Each location will be serviced by three managed switches featuring 10Gb SFP+ ports, creating a solid foundation for high-speed data transfer.
The setup will include three Wi-Fi 7 access points, ensuring no dead spots across the property. “It’s critical for both work and play,” he added, mentioning plans for streaming 4K movies, recording footage from multiple IP cameras, and running game servers.
To secure the network, the homeowner is implementing a custom OPNsense firewall on a passive mini PC, meticulously documenting each connection to simplify troubleshooting. “I want to ensure anyone can manage the network, even when I’m away,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of accessibility.
With this innovative approach, the cottage is set to become a hub of connectivity and entertainment, making it a prime example of how technology can redefine rural living. As the project continues, the homeowner remains enthusiastic about the future, envisioning a seamless digital lifestyle that transcends traditional living.
