Oklahoma Fugitive Caught After 13 Years Evading Justice

UPDATE: After 13 years on the run, Anthony Lennon, a fugitive on Oklahoma’s 10 Most Wanted List, has been apprehended in Canton, New York. This follows his elaborate evasion of law enforcement following serious criminal charges related to child pornography.

U.S. Marshal for the Western District of Oklahoma, Johnny Kuhlman, confirmed the arrest, stating, “Let’s just say that he’s been very good at evading justice.” Lennon was initially convicted in 2008 for possession of child pornography but received only probation. However, his subsequent violations led to a more serious legal situation.

Authorities reported that in March 2012, the Moore Police Department discovered evidence of additional child pornography on his electronic devices. This prompted law enforcement to charge Lennon with eight counts of felony possession of child pornography. Chief Todd Gibson remarked, “Our worst fears were confirmed.” This was the turning point that led to his disappearance.

Following the charges, Lennon allegedly staged a robbery and kidnapping at the Super 8 Motel where he worked, which further complicated the investigation. District Attorney Jennifer Austin asserted that authorities never believed he was a victim but was actively evading capture.

For over a decade, investigators traced Lennon through various aliases, leading them to upstate New York. Kuhlman detailed the efforts of local Deputy U.S. Marshals who, alongside the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, successfully located and arrested Lennon outside a grocery store while he was attending university.

Lennon now faces a federal charge for failing to register as a sex offender, in addition to the original eight felony counts. Austin noted that further charges could be forthcoming as discussions continue with federal partners about the prosecution process. “We will have to work together to determine basically who gets to go first,” she stated.

Currently, Lennon is in custody in New York, awaiting a judge’s decision on whether he will be extradited back to Oklahoma. The case has reignited discussions about the challenges of tracking down fugitives and protecting vulnerable populations from predators.
