Misleading Video Claims to Show Comet 3I/ATLAS Footage
A video circulating on social media falsely claims to show new footage of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. In reality, the clip features a microscopic organism known as a paramecium, not the comet itself. The misleading post appeared on X, formerly Twitter, on October 27, 2025, and has since sparked confusion among viewers.
The video was shared by the user @BGatesIsaPyscho, who captioned it, “🚨 New 3I/Atlas Footage just dropped!!” An examination of the video reveals it does not originate from any accredited astronomy research agency. A reverse image search conducted on October 29, 2025 failed to produce relevant results, instead leading to incorrect associations with the comet.
To clarify the organism depicted in the video, Lead Stories contacted Jack A. Gilbert, a prominent microbiologist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego. Gilbert confirmed via email that the organism is likely a freshwater paramecium. He noted that better imaging techniques would enhance identification but reiterated the organism’s classification.
Currently, NASA’s official webpage dedicated to 3I/ATLAS displays a notice indicating that the site is not being updated due to a lapse in federal funding. Images previously posted by NASA in July and August do not resemble the viral video.
On September 4, 2025, the National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory (NOIRLab) released an image of 3I/ATLAS captured by the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph at Cerro Pachón, Chile. This image shows the comet moving across a dense star field, with colorful streaks indicating the background stars’ positions changing relative to the comet.
The spread of misinformation highlights the need for critical assessment of content shared on social media. As the fascination with interstellar events continues, accurate representation and verification of scientific phenomena remain essential.
