Senate Demands NBA’s Gambling Investigation Details Following Indictments
UPDATE: The United States Senate has urgently reached out to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver for critical information regarding the league’s investigation into potential gambling violations. This development follows last week’s shocking federal indictments of Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, Portland Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups, and former NBA player and coach Damon Jones, raising serious concerns about the integrity of professional basketball.
In a letter sent on Monday, October 23, 2023, the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, chaired by Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), highlighted that these indictments are a matter of “Congressional concern.” The committee is demanding documentation on the NBA’s gambling policies and a detailed list of investigations linked to betting activities, emphasizing that “the integrity of NBA games must be trustworthy and free from the influence of organized crime or gambling-related activity.”
The committee’s inquiry is particularly pressing, given that Rozier, Billups, and Jones were part of a sweeping indictment involving 34 individuals as part of two overlapping federal gambling investigations. The letter calls for information on any investigations into players, coaches, employees, or owners since 2020, as well as communications between the NBA and sportsbooks regarding suspicious wagers.
“Understanding the specifics of the NBA’s investigation is crucial, especially given the allegations against Rozier, who is accused of sharing inside information and profiting from bets,” the committee stated. The accusations suggest Rozier may have even altered his gameplay for betting advantages.
In response to these serious allegations, the NBA previously stated in January 2025 that it investigated unusual betting activity concerning Rozier’s performance in March 2023 but found no violations of NBA rules. “We couldn’t find anything,” Silver remarked after the indictments, asserting that Rozier cooperated during the investigation, including providing his phone for review.
The urgency of this inquiry reflects growing concerns about the potential impact of gambling scandals on public trust in sports. The committee’s letter warns that sports betting scandals could lead the American public to assume that all sports are corrupt, a sentiment that could have far-reaching consequences for the NBA and its players.
